Dr Seuss was a mediocre artist who beat “quirky” to death, and his verse was idiot doggerel that didn’t scan properly and needed made-up words to rhyme: he was a hack with a smart gimmick. There. I’ve said it. ---

Genesis continued to be good after they went pop, & their lyrics arguably became both more sane & more accessible. I second that American prime-time dramatic television makes many American movies look pathetically badly written. Not exactly heresy, but a snippy observation: Sequential art storytelling in America would be in noticeably better shape if at least two of the five following things had happened:[ul][li]Marvel/Epic had put _Alien Legion_ on newsstands[_]Harvey had stayed in business[_]Phil Seuling had never developed the Direct Sales Market[_]A better word than “comics” had been coined & brought into use before 1970 (other than the technically correct “cartoon”–see the next item)[_]Walt Disney had died in infancy, sparing us from the association of his brand of sanitized pablum with cartoons.[/ul][/li]The last one (maybe two) things on that list could have saved American animation some grief as well. Early Kurtzman issues of MAD are largely incoherent. Superman’s motivation (simple altruism + incredible power) is cooler & more special than Batman’s or Spider-Man’s, or at least severely underrrated. Barbecue is nasty. ---

Survivor is an excellent view into the psychology of the human mind. Soap operas have some of the best actors in entertainment - and they get overlooked because well, they’re on soap operas. But some of these actors and actresses could act rings around any of the men or women on the big screen. E. ---

OK, here’s the heresy: Comic books are not, contrary to the CW, being destroyed by competition from tv & video games. American comics have been very badly hurt by decisions in the comics industry over two generations. When I started buying comics, they were about a buck each. Marvel & DC. Next thing you know it’s a buck-seventy-five at the cheapest and upwards of 3.oo for the fancy-shmancy glossy things that have now all but taken over. My allowance couldn’t handle the price and my brain couldn’t handle the fact that lame-ass mags like The New Warriors and Ravage 2099 were all over the place. Ugh. After the third massive X-crossover in my short lifetime I grew extremely fed-up with being robbed blind every week. I had to look hard to find shit worth reading. ---

Probably a heresy to all the American comic nerds… 2000AD was the best comic franchise ever not based on a single character, but each issue containing many continuing stories, including everything from Gothic Horror to high quality Sci Fi. Judge Dredd could kick Batman’s butt, and stories like Halo Jones went beyond anything I have seen as far as quality and imagination goes. ---

J. Michael Straczynski’s finest work on television is Captain Power. Babylon Five is pretentious crap with bad special effects, that rips off the backbone of its plot from Tolkien. ---

Some porn actresses have more acting talent than some “A” level mainstream actresses. That is not saying much, in some instances. In MANY instances, porn actresses are much better looking than mainstream actresses – at least, from a guy’s POV. And I’m not JUST talking about bods here … some porn actresses having amazingly beautiful faces – even some of the ones that show up in amateur videos or kink videos. ---

John Kricfalusi’s work on the first two seasons of _Ren & Stimpy_ is frequently dull and lifeless, when not being self-indulgent and pointless. The series became more enjoyable after Bob Camp took over. ---

Heavy Metal is no sillier than Grand Opera, and vastly more entertaining. Motley Crue were a better band than Nirvana. Motorhead are a better band than Radiohead. Jazz comes in three sub-genres: bland, twee and irritating. No matter who it’s played or sung by, all Blues is boring and repetitive: the more “authentic”, the more boring. “Hip Hop Culture” is a contradiction in terms. ---

Green Day’s most recent album is not a rock opera! Stop saying it is! Kanye West’s “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” is the most offensive music video I’ve ever seen for the following reasons: 1. It is offensive that some jerk gets paid thousands of dollars for a song whining about how he isn’t good enough for the Grammies. 2. It is offensive that this same jerk would equate his problems to the plight of forced-laborers mining diamonds in the hell regions of Africa. 3. It is offensive and untrue to depict white people as the only beneficiaries of Blood Diamonds. 4. The way he plays those keyboards at the end is offensive. ---
