Let’s play Heresy!

In what way is John Norman better? Are you considering all Gor books or just the best few?

Most Star Trek the Next generation episodes are unwatchable. Except for the ones where Westley saves the day.

Some of this has been said:

Independent Film <> quality
Anime <> quality
Independent non-RIAA Band <> quality

Alton Brown’s meticulous food expertise and knowledge is complete BS and is merely obsessive-compulsive ranting.

Ooh, and I completely forgot to add what I originally wanted to post here…

…a heresy that makes all other heresies seem heretical in their lack of heriticitude…

Starship Troopers was a brilliant and well-executed movie, regardless of whether or not it was true to the book.

Bah!

Beaten by several minutes. Anyway, I agree completely.

I also think that most “New Horror” released in the wake of Scream is pretty good. And a few, The Faculty and Disturbing Behavior especially should be considered classics.

Agree that A.I. was a fantastic movie.

Napolean Dynamite is not a good movie

Neither is The Truman Show.

I think Ronald Reagan was a great President and that George Bush is quite possibly the worst president ever. (Individually those two statements are not necessarily heresy, but in combination they probably are.)

He is better in that he created an entirely new genre of fiction, IMHO. He successfully combined softcore bondage porn with sword and sorcery fiction and came up with something that couldn’t be described as bondage porn, but couldn’t really be described as just sword and sorcery fiction as well. Despite his poor plotting, characterization and dialogue, he created a believable world in Gor, pretty much by force of will (his interest in ethnology didn’t hurt, either).

He’s better than either of them because he did so much, with much more limited skills as a writer. Reminds me of H.P. Lovecraft in that regard.

OK, now that’s going beyond heresy to perversity.

99% of horror films are predictable shlock and not worth the time it takes to watch their preview commercial. Which generally tells the entire story anyway. PLOT: Something comes back from the dead. Somebody living dies. Something gets killed again… or does it?..

Most recent movies based off comic books are pretty damn good. And I don’t like comic books. Okay… Daredevil sucked.

Underworld, Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were hugely underated.

Leonardo DiCapprio was entirely unbelievable as Howard Hughes. Unbelievably bad, that is.

Oceans 11 and 12 were cool because of the cast and some dialogue but for no other reason.

Meet Joe Black was really really good.

A Series of Unfortunate Events was a huge disappointment.

Andi McDowell has ruined every film she has ever been in.

Pulp Fiction was rubbish.

Jimi Hendrix; the man who strangled guitars.

Hugh Grant; brilliant at playing Hugh Grant.

Cricket; what could be more tedious?

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh such relief! Fabulous game, may be back for more.

The Dune Chronicals was a terrible series – the first book was brilliant, but the rest was utter crap.

James Joyce is tedious, and I failed to finish Ulysses… twice.
John Wayne numbers among the worst actors of all time.
I dunno if it’s heresy, but I’ve got a VHS tape of The Blue Lagoon, and I’d rather watch it than Citizen Kane any day of the week.
The Doors were not very good. Not very good at all.

Dungeons & Dragons was a worse movie than Battlefield Earth.

Except Hudson Hawk, which is one of the top ten finest films of all time.

Friends was total crap. Every person who was ever involved with it, or slept with/cohabitated with/procreated with/married anyone involved with it is a loser. Period. I have more talent and looks in my pinky toe than that entire cast.

Life in Hell rocks.

Rap sucks. And swallows.

A perfect trifecta.

IMHO - Terribly Overrated:

  1. The Beatles/John Lennon - I’ll take Wings over Plastic Ono any day of the week.
  2. Elton John - Since November 1973 he’s produced more crap than a herd of elephants.
  3. Miles Davis - Some great work, but the majority of the releases I’ve heard don’t deserve the accolades they receive.
  4. Woody Allen - His books are usually far superior to his films…but that might be due to the fact I don’t have to look at him.
  5. Steven King - Frightening, indeed.
  6. Cecil Adams - Maybe I’ll just keep those opinions to myself.
  7. Steven Bochco - If being a creator means just plugging the same stereotypical characters into differently titled programs, he’s aced his craft.
  8. Jackson Pollock - Repeat after me, Gar-fucking-bage.
  9. ‘Gone With The Wind’ - Perhaps it should have been titled ‘Snore Through This Fart’
  10. John Berendt’s ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ - A good read - poor film. I recommend his new book, ‘The City of Falling Angels’ to everyone once it’s released in October.

Thai food is disgusting and vile. There, I said it.
P.S. The best book Tim Powers ever wrote was “The Stress of Her Regard.” Although the rest of his books are basically just as good. Except maybe “Dinner at Deviant’s Palace”.

Batman, if prepared, can’t beat everybody.

Or put another way: Cilantro and lime - not the way I want my food seasoned

The Lion King is nowhere near as good as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

Fantasia 2000 is fantastic, clearly better than the original.
The new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is VASTLY better than the highly overrated original.
Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High have not stood the test of time.
Lord of the Rings is a fine fantasy series, if a bit tedious, but not even in the same league as A Song of Ice and Fire.
Titanic absolutely deserved its best picture oscar. It’s a gorgeous, compelling, exciting, moving, epic masterpiece. And its writing and acting are (for the most part) top notch.
