Let’s take a little time to look at what’s going on, shall we? I realize that integrating new information and new policies is difficult, but there’s no reason to pretend that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia at this point. Marley, I understand that you’re currently under assault from numerous directions, and probably want to minimize the number of sources of criticism. But there’s absolutely no reason to do so in the manner that you have been. Don’t post in this thread again. I’m afraid you’re mistaken that I hadn’t read the thread, let alone made a token effort to do so. I appreciate the moderator “I get the last word, so screw you” attitude in being able to tell me to stop posting in that thread, though - that’s a nice touch. A literal reading of the thread at that point certainly doesn’t point to you saying you were “thinking of an example” - but it also doesn’t point to you instructing anyone other than kayaker of hijacking the thread, nor does it give any indication of what that hijack is OR what the reasoning for that is. A casual reader of the thread (excluding, of course, anyone who hadn’t made “a token effort to read the posts”) couldn’t, in my opinion, make any determination of what your mod suggestion was (ignoring the fact that your “don’t hijack” comment wasn’t a mod note). Ignoring that, if I hadn’t made a token effort of reading the thread, how could I “ignore” mod instructions? I certainly could not have done so actively, right? At the very least, you’ve done an entirely inadequate job of comprehending my intention, which was to highlight the hypocrisy of telling someone to not bring up Cesario’s posting history of highly inappropriate and unmoderated sexual comments, while maintaining a moderation stance of there being no new policy of moderating comments that have a possibly inappropriate sexual connotation. > [@What constitutes an off-topic comment?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/what-constitutes-an-off-topic-comment/656134/57): > > There was no warning. There was no moderator instruction in that thread to begin with. I think **Marley23** jumped the warning gun here, and even if there was a need for moderator action, a simple note would suffice. I don’t see why he was so quick to issue a warning. That was harsh. ---

I usually agree with **Marley’s** decisions, but he only instructed **kayaker** not to hijack the thread. He didn’t post a note instructing people in general not to hijack the thread, so there were no instructions to be ignored except to **kayaker**. I think the warning was harsh and that **Marley** hit a foul tip right into the catcher’s glove. ---

He didn’t tell you to calm down. He said, “Let us all calm down” which is more a pleasant urging than a command. That being said, sounds like you could use that advice. ---
