Let's Critique Our DVD Collections!

I finally got my list together. Nothing too special, but a few fairly unique vids. There may be one or two movies that I’ve loaned out and forgotten for this list. Also, DVD Aficionado doesn’t list my version of Dr. Strangelove.

Well, you actually inspired me to organize my DVD’s today. My list ( minus two ):

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&sub=All&id=tamerlane

A few decent things, a few really trashy things, some stuff in between. I have a few dubious impulse/sale buys in there. I doubt anybody is salivating over my copy of the so-so teen film Can’t Hardly Wait and I wouldn’t recommend Planet of the Vampires to anybody but dedicated students of scifi/horror film ( it has some interesting imagery when it is not looking impossibly fake ) or folks like me that became fascinated with it while watching it late night as a kid ;). Satan’s School for Girls? Eh…well it was cheap and I find Pamela Franklin kinda fascinating ( I curse the fact that The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie isn’t available on DVD yet ), but lord was it boring. But nobody better criticize Vamp - the albino street gang alone makes it worth owning :p.

Interestingly enough, while this DVD Aficionado place does seem to have a decent database, it did fail to produce two of my dvd’s on a search, both foreign films. One is the director’s cut of Das Boot ( hardly an obscure film as foreign films go ), the other a two-disc set of Le Cercle Rouge ( which is a criterion release and really should be in there ).

Tried to pick up 12 Monkeys today and was horrified when I was told it is out of print. Further The Missouri Breaks and The Hairdresser’s Husband are also not out yet .

Okay - stuff I need to pick up from gobear’s list:

*Dirty Dozen, The (1967)
Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The - Studio Classics (1947)
Jackie Brown - Collector’s Edition (1997)
Jaws - 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition (1975)
Lady Jane (1986)
Magnificent Seven, The - Special Edition - Western Legends (1960)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Night of the Hunter, The (1955)
Topsy-Turvy (1999)
Producers, The - Special Edition (1968)
Run Lola Run (1998)
Tremors - Collector’s Edition (1990)
Quadrophenia - Special Edition (1979)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Special Edition (1954)

  • Grand Canyonscope (Short) (1954)
    all the MSTK3 stuff*

Stuff from gobear’s list that made me shake my head in dismay :stuck_out_tongue: :

Volcano (1997)

Things I am dead certain I own, but now am distressed I can’t find:

All That Jazz
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove, etc…

Hey, neat website. I couldn’t help myself: I had to register and make my own list. Pretty good database they’ve got: it found everything I have. And whaddaya know? I own one hundred and twenty five movies. I had no idea I had so many. And yet, looking at gobear’s list, I feel… unmanned. I’m going to have to go out tonight and buy a bunch of new DVDs.

Anyway, here’s my DVDs.. Most of them, anyway. I’ve got a few others, but they probably wouldn’t be in the database, and they’re none of your business, anyway. :o

Hmmm…stuff I need from Miller’s list include:

7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)
Blazing Saddles (1974)
Straight to Hell (1987)

and possibly:

Emperor’s New Groove, The (2000) - For some reason it amused the hell out of me.

and…

Shakes the Clown (1991) - ‘The Citizen Kane of drunken clown films.’

  • Tamerlane

How can people not have The Good, the Bad and the Ugly? That movie is DA BOMB.

The movies that, someday, I know I will own off of gobear’s list:

American History X
Bound
Clerks
Excalibur
Fargo
Finding Nemo
Kill Bill
A Knight’s Tale
(you heard me)
Pulp Fiction (still have it on VHS)
A Fish Called Wanda
All the MST3K stuff I don’t have already
Buffy season 4
Dawn and Day of the Dead
The Shining
The Abyss
(Mine, inexplicably, is Full Screen)
Babylon 5 season 4
All the Futurama

Inexplicably missing from my bookshelf (I KNOW I own them…)
Shakespeare in Love
Crouch Tiger, Hidden Dragon
2001
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Considering some of the movies on my list (It Runs in the Family?!?!), I’m not going to go anywhere near “Movies I’d burn.” Glass houses, and all that.

Oh, and one recommendation: Dreamworks’ animated The Prince of Egypt. You’ve got a few cartoons, a lot of musicals, and I know you’re interested in religion. I think this one would be right up your alley.

I also had to register because of this thread. Here’s my collection. It’s heavy on Criterions and cartoons. 208 movies! The problem is my roommate also has about 200 of his own, so some that I watch a lot and consider my favorites aren’t even mine. He’s moving out soon so now I have to break my bank account to get my own copies.

Looking at Miller’s list, I would like to own:

*7th Voyage of Sinbad

BASEketball

Big Trouble in Little China - Special Edition

Dark City*
Overall, a nice collection. Some titles there that I’ll never touch, but hey, it’s your collection. Knock yourself out!

Forgot to include my link :smack:

<a href=“http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&sub=All&id=datazak”>My DVD List at DVD Aficionado</a>

AAARGGHHHH!!! :smack: :smack: :smack:

How embarrasing! (I just woke up over here, sorry)

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&sub=All&id=datazak

From DataZak’s list:

The Iron Giant
The Nightmare Before Christmas
(another movie I own on tape and have yet to upgrade)
Black Adder
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Airplane!
The Frighteners
Galaxy Quest
Groundhog Day
Hudsucker Proxy
Top Secret!
What’s Up, Tiger Lily?
Brazil
Apollo 13
The Haunting
(the 1963 version, for those playing at home)
Flash Gordon
Much Ado about Nothing
Sneakers
Gettysburg

Great collection!

DataZak:

Spongebob Squarepants Season One
Elizabeth R

If I had an all-region player I’d be all over that Ed Wood. And I realized I’m sorely lacking in Coen Bros. movies!

Stuff to steal from Datazak:

Wild Bunch, The - Restored Director’s Cut (1969)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Special Edition (1969)
Little Big Man (1970)
Tora! Tora! Tora! - Special Edition (1970)
Donnie Darko (2001)
Day of the Jackal, The (1973)
Jason and the Argonauts
Forbidden Planet (1956)
12 Monkeys - Collector’s Edition (1995)
Diabolique - The Criterion Collection
( Diaboliques, Les ) (1955)
My Favorite Year (1982)
Hudsucker Proxy, The (1994)
His Girl Friday - Columbia Classics (1940)
Galaxy Quest (1999)

Further stuff to filch from Kaspar Hauser:

39 Steps, The - The Criterion Collection (1935)
Black Orpheus - The Criterion Collection
( Orfeu Negro ) (1959)
City of Lost Children, The
( Cité des enfants perdus, La ) (1995)
M - The Criterion Collection
( M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder ) (1931)
Winter Kills - Special Edition (1979)

Really everybody so far has had stuff worth pursuing. Good lists all the way around :). Though it makes me want to go out and spend wayyyy too much money.

  • Tamerlane

From Kaspar’s collection, I would like to have Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will and all of his Walt Disney Treasures

Here’s my meager collection.

Most of it anyway. I can’t remember all the titles. I’ll have to add more when I get home.

I stumped their database with my Van der Graaf Generator live DVD, and they only had the Procol Harum Musikladen one with a different cover, but here’s the rest of my collection:

My DVDs

Here’s mine on DVD Aficianado

Mine that they don’t list:

Jamaica Inn/Rich and Strange
Ride in the Whirlwind (Digital Works)
Road to Bali (Front Row)

Wow, lots of good stuff here! I need to swipe every one of Datazak’s Criterions. Even with DVDPlanet.com’s 35% discount for Criterions, I still can’t afford to buy all the ones I want.
