Let's talk about anal glands

I watched the Dr. Bob video and he does it the way I saw another vet doing it and it didn’t seem to help.

at least, after the vet did all three of my dogs we went home and they all immediately continued butt scooting.

I was at a different vet and told her the - she said, they need to be done “from the inside” !?!

she took the dogs away and did them, so I didn’t see it happen.

anyone heard of this?

OK, a more thorough googling found it. the video I found made it look painful and it probably needs to be left to a vet to do.

ugh, good thing dogs are worth it!

I’d rather not have a dog than have a dog with this issue. I’ve never had to deal with it, despite owning several dogs.

Compared to springtime yard patrol and disposing of accumulated poop, this is a breeze.

I found out a couple of weeks ago during a routine vet visit that my little weenie dog has an anal gland infection. Two weeks of antibiotics didn’t clear it up so after a second expression, the vet filled the gland with antibiotics directly. I’m hoping that it’s cleared up when we go back in another two weeks. I don’t want to do it myself, but if it’s something that will need to be done every few weeks, I will have to. It is one of the worst stinks I have ever smelled.

Doesn’t this mess up their social recognition system? Did you notice any change when your dog got together with other dogs?

Nope. And we have three dogs.

We really had no choice in doing this. It wasn’t an issue of the glands getting plugged. The dog would somehow trigger his anal glands when he got the slightest bit agitated. He smelled awful, and riding in a car with him was out of the question. Even the vet said there was a serious problem.

The surgery itself wasn’t a big deal and the dog was in no distress afterwards. I’d do it again without hesitation.
