A few days ago I decided to try out this myspace thing that I hear Opie and Anthony talk about. I look around for people in my area and invite a couple to be friends. Just today I check my messages, and I have about 20 new ones. I check out the first one, and it’s a hot chick who thinks I’m hot. Good news. So I check out her profile and do the “Add to Friends” thing. Next message is the same. Can’t believe my luck. The funny thing is that they all have webcams that they want to chat with me on. I think I replied to the first saying something like “Sorry, I don’t have a webcam.” Also, they all seem to want “friends with benefits”, or just like to have sex with random guys that they meet on myspace. Also, they’re about to come to my town and want to “get to know each other better.”

It wasn’t long before I sensed something fishy. (I’m pretty smart, huh?) I was suspicious at first, (my picture isn’t great, certainly not good enough to get girls to subtly offer up sex. [Here’s me](http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=61531271) ) but couldn’t figure out what the angle was until I guessed that these webcams would eventually cost me. There are some that don’t have this angle, but I can’t figure out what the scam is.

Anyway, most of the messages wouldn’t show up, and just now, after deleting a new message with a link to complete a mortgage application that I didn’t ask for, I don’t have any messages. (for a second I saw that I had a lot, and then it only showed the first 2 on each page. After deleting the ones that were showing, I now have 0 messages.) So how am I supposed to get in touch with all of the girls that are coming to my town in a couple weeks to have sex with me? (Did I mention that they all have hot friends that will probably join in on the orgy?)

So, what are y’all’s experiences on myspace? What common scams are out there?

I have had a great time with Myspace. I know use it more than an email account for messaging friends.
I have only been junked a few times. Much much less than I hear other poeple complain about. I think I’ve only gotten 3 or 4 random band messages. I haven’t added a single one of them. And I think I’ve maybe had 3 vague porno messages.

I did get cruised for the first time the other week by a complete stranger who asked me out. That was truly bizarre. We went out and had a decent time.

I think it’s junk. Most of my friends are musicians, and they love it because it’s so easy for them to get info out to there fans, so I guess it works well for them. My girlfriend likes the games on it. But I check my account about once every two weeks.

**betenoire** runs the SDMB list there. Drop him a line to get on it.

Heh, I use MySpace because my sister uses MySpace. Once I got the account, I went ahead and found a handful of my friends and added them to my list, and some random stuff like that. I don’t really like the layout of the site, it’s way too messy, and 80% of the time, I can’t read anyone’s profiles because their backgrounds render the actual content of the profile nearly invisible.

Personally, I prefer Facebook, though it’s more limited in who can use it.

The only bad thing about MySpace is that the site is down so much. Or parts of the site are disabled, almost all the time.

I have a myspace account, mostly to communicate with my grown kids and other friends, and there are some groups I belong to which are fun. I have never been spammed or propositioned or anything, hmmmm, must not be doing something right!

Anyway, **Rucksinator,** I see that you are in my extended network, I wonder how we are connected?

The internet is weird.

I use my myspace account mostly for the bulletins. We send out weekend plans, local bands shows, and sundry items. The rest is crap. If you want to borrow part of [my bio](http://www.myspace.com/tessgonzalez) (particularly the About Me section), it really helps cut down on the crap & spam.

I’m okay with it. I’ve been spammed a few times.

Actually, the musicians are starting to annoy me because it seems like half the “new friend invites” I’ve gotten are basically people trying to get me to make their band a friend.

I’m frankly not interested in giving your band free advertising, buddy, and I don’t appreciate what feels like being solicted to. If I like your band, I’ll ask to be YOUR friend.

Hell, send me a message, get to know me , and not just as an excuse to get me to listen to your band. Then I wouldn’t feel so put upon.

I’d say that that cuts out the friend requests from drooling idiots like me, but I’m thinking that it’s the female part that cuts down on most of the spam.
By the way, you’re pretty hot for a 99-year-old. It just so happens that I’m coming to your town\* in a couple weeks to party with my equally hot friends. Let’s chat by videocam before I come up.

- Notice that I can’t be bothered to copy and paste the name of your town, so I just wrote “your town”

You’d be surprised how many “Hi! You’re so pretty. Wanna be friends? Just click on the link to my web page.” emails I got at the begining. I’m just starting with the mortgage people.

Thanks. People in my family age well. I don’t have a videocam, but if you wanna click on my \*\*[web page](http://not.real.please) \*\* , I’d love to be “friends”.

I signed up about a month ago actually. I’ve only accepted “friend invites” from people I am atleast acquainted with. It seems stupid to me to have 387 friends… and only know 5 of them. What’s the point?

The up-side of the “myspace” scene is that I have been in contact with 2 friends from back in 9th grade.

Wow I’m in both little\*bit’s and Rucksinator’s extended network. That’s pretty impressive since we all live so far apart, and I don’t have a Myspace account. Maybe the site is just flawed.

Ooooh, I know! I hate that. And it’s usually music I’d never like in a million years either.

You also have the guys who just do a search of all the girls in Vancouver and add them. I get a lot of that. Guys in Vancouver with 395 female myspace friends and profiles full of comments featuring sparkly “Thanx 4 da ADD!” and “Muahhh SEXY!” graphics.

I actually got added by a BOOK once. Yes, that’s right! I am just so cool that inanimate objects want to be my friend!

Also, a giant GAH to the animated backgrounds and the music on the site that plays automatically. Having music on a site that plays automatically hasn’t been a good thing since… well, probably ever. Either I’m already listening to music or I feel like sitting in silence, and hearing whatever whiny band you stuck on your profile does not help with either of these pursuits!

Sorry, didn’t mean to hijack. I like the “everyone’s connected” aspect - I can look at my friends’ profiles, and friends of friends, and find people I haven’t seen in years. That’s what makes it pretty neat. Of course, I can’t look at the site for more than 10 minutes without it somehow becoming so slow that I wind up eating the computer out of frustration and having to buy a new one. MySpace is costing me a lot of computers.

That’s right, mess up a perfectly good post of mine by citing actual facts. :smack:
