Let's talk about retro songs from this century

Country Song by Jake Bugg

Was totally sure it was Woodie Guthrie or someone of that era but it’s not a cover.

Good one. Tame Impala’s got a few great retro songs!

Question: What '70s-era rock song (or songs) have a guitar sound like the one in the first few seconds of “Elephant”? I’ve heard something similar before, but I can’t pin it down.

Khruangbin do a nice line of 70s funk-psychedelia:

One interesting example is Kosmischer Laufer, instrumental music that was suggested to be from the 1970’s/80’s and was the hidden music that drove the DDR to athletic success, or some such bollocks.

likelihood is, it is fully contemporary, but very good. It doesn’t actually matter if the story is fake or not.

On a similar note, there’s Twin Temple, a doo-wop band that asks the question “What if Amy Winehouse had been a Satanist?”

It’s lifted straight from the Doctor Who theme

I know it’s popular to hate on and meme-ify Smash Mouth, but Walking on the Sun could’ve been recorded in '67

Chain Gang of 1974 pretty much sits in 1980s pop/new wave genre.

I’m going to link to a Jai Wolf track featuring Chain Gang, but you’ll get the idea.

Another good one…

The Walk Hard soundtrack is entirely comprised of original songs written in the distinctive styles of bands and artists from the 50s to the 80s. They’re all incredibly well done. This one is a take on the Beatles/George Harrison.

I’m not sure if that was on purpose or not, but I found this:

‘Walkin’ On The Sun’ is a classic, straight out of the groovy, secret agent world of Austin Powers. Although it was written in the aftermath of the Rodney King beatings, it has an organ hook that’s a deadringer for The Zombies’ ‘She’s Not There’ and growling staccato vocal that make it the perfect soundtrack for a strut down Carnaby Street circa 1967

Stephen Sanchez’s Until I Found You, released last month, is straight outta the 50s.

And Harry Styles’ As It Was has a strong 80s vibe.

‘Let’s Duet’, a parody from that movie of the Johnny Cash / June Carter Cash duets, is a classic of double entendre:

This song just came up on The Spectrum (a SiriusXM channel); excellent example.

This is the closest I’ve been able to find for the OP’s request for anything with that '80s S.A.W. vibe. When the layered vocal harmonies kick in see if you get Bananarama flashbacks.

Beyonce’s “Break My Soul” is mostly a flashback to early 90s Top 40 house, with that organ and piano sound (Korg M1).

“Lost in the Woods” from Frozen 2 is definitely retro 80’s power ballad.

Thanks. I guess. I just spent about 90 minutes watching various Khruangbin vids. It’s not the first time though. Good stuff.

Oh very much yes. Even the visuals.

I’d say … solo Peter Cetera, more specifically?

This is ten years old, but sounds like it’s from the early 60’s to me.

Veronica Falls - Bad Feeling

That was definitely my first impression when I first heard it.
