Let's talk about The Pogues

What really upset me about it was at one point, Shane is struggling to explain something, cannot form the thought, then gives up and lets out this half-frustrated, half-“what can you do?” hissing laugh.

:frowning:

A poet who now has trouble expressing himself…

Yeah that was sad. I was oggling the parts where he drinks gin straight out of the bottle, warm. Of course I know he does that anyway but to see it was startling.

Oh and a bit of trivia: today is the day in 1986 that he got hit by that taxi and screwed up his poor teeth even more.

Update for those who care: the box set is now set for May, not April 28.

Funny story: I went to CT to bring my mom back to Logan for a flight on Saturday. On the way, I had the Pogues playing and was singing as loud as I could when you have your mother in the car. This is how the conversation went:

Mom: Is this a CD or the radio?
Me: CD.

(later)

Mom: What kind of music is this?
Me: It’s The Pogues. They’re Irish.
Mom: Hmmm.

(later)

Mom: Did you pay money for this?
Me: (laugh) Yes, I paid for it. They’re the best band ever.
Mom: Huh.

(later)

Mom: What is wrong with this man singing?
Me: Oh mom …
Mom: It’s some nice words but you can’t understand him. [She could understand my singing but not his.]
Me: He doesn’t have any teeth.
Mom: What?! How do you know he doesn’t have teeth?
Me: It’s well known that he doesn’t. Anyway you can see in pictures that he doesn’t.
Mom: Well he ought to do something about that.
Me: Yeah …

So that was my mom’s introduction to The Pogues.

Bwaaaaahaaaaahaaa! Awesome!

I laughed on and off for about 10 miles. Oh mom!!!

The track listing is out for the box set and it looks fantastic. Five CDs, more than 100 tracks. Unfortunately it has gone up from the previously listed price of £29.99 to £42.99. Hope it doesn’t go even higher.

Play.com is still saying 4/28 release but that’s not correct.

Missbunny, what cd was that? I didn’t know there were any Pogues albums from after he lost his teeth.
The box set looks nice. Maybe I should save up.

I managed to introduce someone to the Pogues back in October when I was at a temp job. It was kind of a laid back day because it was the last day of Ramadan so a lot of people took it off to celebrate (the Twin Cities has a fairly large Somali population, and a lot of them worked at that company) so the only people in the department I worked in that day were me and a guy in his 60’s. During my lunch break I drove home and grabbed my cd player to listen to while we worked in the dark room, and I put on Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash. He’s a cool guy, so I figured he might like it, and he did, so I gave him copies of it and If I Should Fall.

Oh there are lots of CDs from when he was losing them (both Pogues and Popes); and Disc 2 of the Ultimate Collection is the live concert at Brixton in 2001, which is what I was listening to (and lots of “unofficial” releases since then). He was low on teeth by Brixton for sure. He still had “some” at that time, although not many, so the statement “He doesn’t have any teeth” wasn’t meant to be completely literal as in NO teeth whatsoever. But it would take too much to explain that to my mum.
