I just got back from Mexico and there were a number of beer cocktails available. Besides the obvious ones like the chelada and the Michelada, I also had something the resort called a bull, which was a dark beer (the bartender gave me a can of Leon), rum, lime, and simple syrup. I tried making that tonight and I clearly did not get the proportioning or perhaps the type of dark beer right (looks like I should have bought a lager instead of an ale) as it doesn’t taste the same. [Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_cocktail) has a decent list of beer cocktails as a starting point but does not include that one. I also can’t get a hit searching the internet for the same thing.

Anyway, has anyone got anything interesting, especially things more complicated than say a boilermaker or an Irish car bomb? Shandies are okay as well.

FLIP

3 eggs
3 teaspoons sugar
1 jigger rum
1 jigger brandy
1 red-hot flip iron or poker heated in fireplace
tall, all-pewter mug
12-16 ounces of beer
In a quart mug break three eggs
Add three teaspoons sugar and stir well
Add in the jigger of rum and the jigger of brandy, beating meanwhile.
Fill remaining volume of mug with beer
Insert red-hot iron until it hisses and foams.
The drink will become only warm.

My personal variation on the shandy has always been a drink I call a “Turbo Lover”;

- 1 22 oz. bottle of Imperial IPA
- 1 16 oz. can of Mike’s Harder Lemonade
- 2 shots of vodka

Combine ingredients, well chilled, in an extra-large glass (I have a glass that holds 40 oz. that works well for this) and drink.

Wikipedia didn’t have Snakebite on that list (although it has it’s own page). Beer+cider.

Some beers mix well together. I know someone who did maybe a porter + something citrusy like Shock Top. Not too bad.

If you’re gonna call it that, you should use very British ingredients, and your glassware should all have leather accents. Must be mixed on a motorcycle.

Beer mug 1/2 - 2/3 full.
Shot glass filled with root beer schnapps.
Drop shot glass in beer mug.
Chug it all down.

Tasty, even if it is a little sophomoric.

There is also the infamous Flaming Dr. Pepper, which IIRC, was a flaming shot of amaretto (and maybe vodka/151/everclear for the flames), put into a glass of beer and drunk.

Apparently the amaretto and beer combination is very close to the flavor of Dr. Pepper. I don’t know because the one time I had a chance to have one, I was drunk enough to be convinced that it was going to burn my eyebrows off, and refused.

This was very popular in the roadhouses, dives and honkytonks of the rural west back about 30-odd years ago when I was doing extensive research in such venues. The drink went by the highly imaginative name of “red beer”. Always with draft beer (usually Bud or the late lamented Blitz-Weinhardt) and you always mixed your own. Bartender would serve up a mug of draft and a small can of tomato juice (a few radicals preferred V8 juice). You slurped the top couple of inches off the mug then topped it back off with juice, added salt & pepper if desired, or add a dash of Tobasco and you had something called a “Snappy Tom”. It was highly regarded as a hair-of-the-dog, morning-after drink. If the beer was ice-cold it actually tasted pretty good. Red beer must have been a western thing…once, in a bar in New England I ordered one and sent the rest of the bar patrons into fits of retching. Nearly got eighty-sixed from the place.

**Obligatory (true) red beer story:** A young lady of my acquaintance, having consumed a large quantity of red beer at a local tavern, suggested we go back to her place for some “afternoon delights”. Since I was at a critical stage in my research I acquiesced to the plan. Halfway back to her pad she gave a loud belch and a gallon or three of red beer made a reappearance…all over her, me and the inside of my truck. This unexpected addition to the bulk of data on the subject indicated that red beer, when mixed with stomach acid produces a bright day-glo orange-red element to the spectrum that is extremely difficult to remove from fabric and upholstry. It also has a secondary function as a powerful libido-killer…further research suggests that a quart bottle of pre-mixed red beer and a tongue depressor (to trigger the urp reflex) could be packaged and marketed as a wildly successful rape-prevention kit.

I named it because a shandy with alcoholic lemonade is called a ‘turbo shandy’, and I thought that using the higher-proof Mike’s and Imperial IPA, along with the vodka and the giant glass, was taking it into overdrive.

I suppose you could use some high-proof cider if you wanted to British it up some.

I can’t stomach any mixture of beer + other than red beer, and that only under specific conditions (ie hungover.) Most of these sound absolutely vile.

I also don’t consider a boilermaker/depthcharge a cocktail either. A shot and a beer is a shot and a beer. A cocktail is something else entirely.

Not a very appealing drink to me. I see that Dos Equis is now selling its own version of the Bud Light -A-Ritas.

Great minds, gentlemen.
We call them Beeritas and drink them by the gallon next to the pool in the summertime.

1 can limeade concentrate
1/2 can tequila (some friends use a whole can)
2 beers

They are surprisingly good. I’ve also added as many as 4 beers, which is still damn good and stretches the concoction a bit.
