Let's talk DSLRs and other big sensor cameras

Shutter lag isn’t the same thing as autofocus performance. Shutter lag is simply the amount of time between when you press the shutter and the camera takes the picture. Cameras don’t even need to be in focus for this to happen.

Autofocus certainly is a feature on which different cameras compete on. Witness a race in the amount of autofocus points and the computational power dedicated to predicting focus on moving targets.

They do tests like making 30 shots while moving a camera around and rating how blurred they were to test the stabilization system. Certainly they could make a series of images focusing on moving targets to determine the rate of accurately focused pictures.

Theres this guy there that asks a lot of the relevant questions ;). The problem as always is getting objective data, it becomes more an exercise in trying to spot who is using the most weasel words. Does seem like the claim is later K5’s are doing a pretty good job, and I think this is again one of those issues where for some it will be light or day while for others its ‘meh’.

There is a US magazine that did AF tests with a picture series where a runner is coming at the camera but it is still pretty limited, and may not be much help about the lens you decide to use if its different.

Nikon D800 previewed.

That thing is a monster. It would be horribly irresponsible for me to spend $3000 on a camera body, right…?

Yes. Probably.

It’s got almost all the tech from the D4 and 36mp for crazy landscape/studio detail. Its uncompressed TIFF files are apparently 212mb. Seems like they’re trying to usurp Canon as the DSLR people use for low end pro video.

Oh, yes, very irresponsible. Wrong on so many levels. Probably a pretty poor choice of how to spend your money. Not really a prudent financial move. Mostly bad, kind of a splurge.

But damn it, you’ve earned it!
