Another reason to never enter a Walmart in the U.S.

Maybe they just want to see how much cash people are bringing into the gam and then raise concessions so that they don’t leave with any.

Yes, because there is no difference between demanding a wallet from a pocket, and an abnormally heavy violin case.

I’d like to know the rationale behind wallet searches too. Anything that would fit in one would also fit in your shoe. Is that next?

Back in the 80’s, I took a train from college to NYC to stay with a friend. On a whim, I jumped on the subway up to Yankee stadium. Even though I had large duffle bag on my back, I bought a ticket and walked right on in, unmolested. I guess I could have had a sniper rifle in there, so maybe that level of scrutiny was too lax. But wallets now? GTFO.

It’s possible the story in Ars Technica is wrong, since it seems to be the only source. Do we have any other source that says that wallets were searched?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume that ARS is sensationalizing one aspect of their security procedures.

I get that there are credit card knifes. There are also regular knives - as other posters point out - that can be easily concealed upon a person.

I’m assuming they aren’t just checking the wallet (and would likely piss off people if they just said “no that case marked ‘glock’ is fine - just give me your wallet”). That makes no sense. Of course you can buy (or make) - very sharp knives that contain no metal and would be easy to bring into a game unless they are using those airport machines.

Of course the NFL has in the past cooperated with the FBI in scanning people with facial recognition - so maybe there is something sinister going on.

I’ve examined a couple of those folding plastic credit card knives. The prospective stabber would be better served by gathering materials inside the stadium and constructing a prison-style shiv.

\<hangs head in shame\> Actually I had to explain to them why I have 23 membership cards and no credit cards except for one BP gas card. They found that so unusual that they had to kick it up to the building manager. That and the dozen of so multi-million and trillion dollar notes I always carry — from Zimbabwe. My building manager has been known to refer to me as “Oh ----- him.” :o

At work its about theft of gift cards and stuff but I am guessing at stadiums (and I’ve seen it at amusement parks) its some of the holsters out there made to look like wallets. The legality of such things is questionable but they are pretty common and easy to get for the usual over-under derringers.

My nephew worked for Amazon for a bit. The most commonly stolen high-value item? Gift cards. He says people were fired almost daily for trying to walk out with high denomination cards for various places.

But unless they’re doing pat downs, they won’t know you haven’t turned over all your wallets. Of course, by the same token, they won’t know about the credit card knife tucked into your sock.

Parks these days are using TSA-like metal detectors and then follow that up with a wand or (in some cases) a pat-down or refusal to admit you. Wallets they will check visually and/or ask you to open it so they can look in. The way they have the things tuned, it is more density than just the metal involved - a plastic snuff can will set off the detector just as surely as a knife would - so even a lot of the plastic weapons will get found. I haven’t tried one of those credit card knives but since I know a few of the security people at one local park I’m tempted to ask them or try it.

I doubt this is true, as far as I know no such density detector exists. If you mean the full body “nude” milimeter scanners the TSA uses, those are really expensive and have a viewer in another area. I doubt sporting events can afford them, and roll them out with no outcry.

The wallet searching makes no sense because anything small enough to conceal in a wallet could just be secreted on your person.
