Captain Hook and Mr. Smee don’t talk like ‘pirates’. Donald Duck has anger issues. Pooh has eating issues. So people who don’t wear pants have emotional problems. Well, maybe he’s right about that. ---

Actually, the point of H. C. Andersen’s _The Little Mermaid_ was based in the morality of the day: your parents and elders are wiser than you are and know what’s best for you, and if you are rebellious and don’t pay attention to them, it will end in tragedy. Disney’s version basically says just the opposite: it’s okay to disobey your parents because they are overbearing and don’t understand you, and everything will come out okay, even if you do. ---

Any sufficiently urgent situation must be resolved by children (if not animals). Adults at best will blithely deny that any problems exist and at worst will actively thwart the efforts of the children to save the world. Actually, I can think of many Disney counter-examples to this idea, but this is a cool thread and I wanted to participate. ---

[/QUOTE] Well, that’s a bit unfair. Actually, the message of TLM is that parents are fallible. They can be overbearing, but they are only being that way to protect you from very real dangers that exist. You ignore your parents edicts at your own peril. However, I agree there is also the idea that parents will imprison you, and it takes willful disobedience for you to break free. ---
