I only came across this thread now as I don’t venture into the Pit very often. Smeghead, you’re one of my most respected posters, I always read your answers and posts with great interest and the depth of your knowledge never ceases to impress me. It saddened me hugely to read this thread and all the shit you’ve gone/are going through. I wish I had something useful to say, but all I can say is I feel for you. I truly hope things get better for you soon. Don’t give up. ---

Thanks, everyone. I just saw this had been bumped. I’m at a conference right now, so time is limited, but suffice it to say that no new horrors have arisen since I last posted. My youngest goes back in to get her head remeasured in a couple of weeks. We’ll find out then if there’s reason to worry. I’m ignoring it until then. My diabetes isn’t responding all that well to insulin yet, but it’s still early days. Did I mention that it’s not just regular run-of-the-mill diabetes, but caused by the fact that my pancreas has essentially shriveled up and died? I’ve got nothing left by a withered, scarred husk of what used to be a pancreas. That’s also why I had the year-long bout of diarrhea. Fun! ---

In the interest of balance, I suppose I should post some good news. My youngest (let’s go with just Y for the younger daughter and O for the older), who has the extremely low muscle tone, has started crawling, sitting, and most importantly, pulling herself up onto her knees using couches and chairs. She’s 10 months old now; we were originally warned that she might not sit independently until 18 months. Her occupational therapist is very very pleased with her progress. Y has turned out to be a very determined little girl. Her OT has also said that she hasn’t seen anything at all to worry about with her social or mental skills. She’s right where she is supposed to be, or even a bit ahead of the curve. Obviously, it’s way too early to say that she’s not autistic or won’t become autistic, but so far so good. So as long as she doesn’t have a brain tumor, she’s doing great. Her sister continues to struggle with her autism. She has good days and bad. She’s making progress, too, but it’s difficult for her. The best thing, though, is that the two girls are starting to become friends. Y idolizes O, and Y is getting old enough to be an interesting plaything for O. It’s fun to watch. ---
