The problem, as I see it, with any sort of time travel, is that once you get to your destination time and unless you have made some preparations, you are essentially a homeless foreigner with no money, no background, no identification and minimal knowledge of the culture who doesn’t speak the language. But it’s not like people will all of a sudden burn you as a witch.
I don’t forsee a Utopia or a Dystopia. There will be wars, bigotry, class structures, political differences, crime and everything else that goes along with having lots of humans around.
There WON’T be massive colonies in space because it will always be easier to build such a habitat here on Earth.
STILL won’t have flying cars.
Probably huge advancements in genetics, biotech, cybernetics, robotics and AI but I don’t forsee people living forever or anything.
People wanting to get pregnant (either men or women) will be offered the option of “feet or pods?”, and “lungs or gills?”, and other stuff like that. There will be people walking around who are visually indistinguishable from my cat – ok, maybe they’ll have bigger heads.
Regarding the latter… A History Channel show (admittedly sensationalistic) implied that it would just take ANY eruption of any length from a supervolcano to change the world’s climate so radically that it’s doubtful humanity would survive. True?
The lack of identification or local money wouldn’t be a significant issue. The same for having a strange accent. You’re newly in from someplace far away that most people have heard of but have never been to or met someone who actually was from there.
Just about anyone (Dopers anyway) could easily set themselves up as an accountant or copy editor for a newpaper. Trading services for room and board was commonplace, there’d be a learning curve but I don’t think anyone would starve to death getting their feet on the ground. Life operated at a much slower pace and if you didn’t manage to get yourself killed, more forgiving. You make too many people suspicious you just move a couple of towns over and try again.
