The scapegoat often wasn’t at fault. If a quarterback threw an interception, it could have been because the receiver ran the wrong route, etc.
Also:
Just because you are on an upwards trajectory does not mean you Will necessarily keep being that way. Maybe your team was 4-12 one year, 6-10 the next, 8-8 the next, and 10-6 the next. Does this you will be a 12-4 Super Bowl contender next year? Not necessarily - you might suddenly implode instead and go 3-13.
