An example of what I think the OP is talking about. The Indianapolis scene from _Jaws_. Now most people remember Robert Shaw’s performance and he did a great job. But he had great lines to work with. What impressed me was Richard Dreyfuss’ performance of the set-up line, _“You were on the Indianapolis?”_ It’s a simple line with no drama inherent in it but Dreyfuss makes it work. The three men have been drinking and joking but when Dreyfuss says that line, the mood suddenly changes. Coach is ranting at the players in the shower, after throwing a load of bats at them. “You lollygag your way around the infield! You lollygag your way to first base! You know what that makes you?” But that’s just the setup. The great line reading is from Robert Whul, as he’s sitting there, indifferent, chewing his gum, like he and Skip are part of a comedy team: “Lollygaggers.” ---
