There were gaps in between all of these. About a year and a half; then about 3 years; then about a year and a half; then about 3 months; then about 3 months again; and finally about 7 years (and counting). I am in my mid-30s. ---

Little shy of 4 years once you take out the period where we were just friends who were around each other more than the people we were dating. 12-18 months (the change from more casual to serious is hard to exactly pinpoint) That’s pretty much it. I’m single and closer to 50 than 40. ---

1. 2 years 2002-2004 2. 1 year 2006-2007 3. 4 years off and on 2008-2012 (Still married but have been separated since 2012) 4. 1.5 years 2012-2014 Currently in a relationship for 6 months. There were 1 night stands and short term relationships in between. I didn’t list anything less than 8 months. I am 25. ---

More than I care to dredge through. Before and after my one marriage I’ve been serially monogamous. I’ve been with my current partner somewhere in the 10 - 12 year range, definitely an outlier for me. ---

1. ex-wife, ~ 5 years, late 1995 to early 2000. 2. ex-fiancée, 3 years, 2004 to 2006. 3. ex-fiancée #2, about a year, 2010-2011. 4. current, 4 years, 2012-present. (If she could figure out how to explain our age difference and introduce me to her dad, it’d grow more. Her mom loves me, and wishes we’d at least move in together.) ETA: just turned 41. ---

GF #1: ~ 2 months. GF #2: ~ 1 month. GF #3: off again, on again, over 3+ years, both before and after GF #4. Probably exclusive ~6 months of that time. GF #4: ~ 2 months. GF #5: ~10 months. GF #6: off again, on again, for ~2.5 years, both before and after GF #7. Exclusive for ~6 months. GF #7: ~2 months. Wife: 27 years and counting. ---

People sometimes want to compare their experiences to what they wonder might be more “normal.” Or at the start of the adventure we call life, they might want to have some idea of what’s in store. The problem I expect is that there is such variation in our experiences, ranging from “none” to “many,” so we may not learn much from a thread like this. (other than some better understanding of that variation) ---
