I just started reading _Game of Thrones_. It’s an awesome, rich world, but there are so many names, so many minor characters, that I find myself flipping around, trying to find how they’re first identified (it probably doesn’t help that I’m reading the book in short sessions). The map included with the Bantam edition is good for place names, but it would be helpful to have a full list of character names as well. I’m scared to go to Wikipedia or elsewhere for fear of spoilers. Does anyone know of a general _persona dramatis_ that goes book by book – I don’t need or want references to Book 4 characters. I’m looking for something like: **Hullen – Eddard Stark’s Master of the Horse** And not: **Hullen – Killed by a pelican in Book 3** Any ideas? ---

My copies of the books have all the characters names in an appendix at the back. ---

I run into the same problem with Peter F. Hamilton. He’ll write a four volume series and there’ll be a hundred characters you have to keep track of. ---

I always tab the beginning of the reference section before reading a _Game of Thrones_ book. If ever a series cried out for a hypertext edition, that’s the one. ---

I hate to say it, but you are setting yourself up for some heartbreak as you watch the years roll by without the next book’s release (even though it was supposedly ready to go upon the release of the fourth book). As you engage in some armchair health analysis and realize that Martin is 100+ pounds overweight, in his 60s and writes a book in the series every ten years or so, you come to the conclusion that he’ll have to live to be 120 to finish the series, or more likely, HBO will just write the last chapters themselves to conclude their series. ---

True; but even if he dies with the series unfinished, I still won’t regret reading it. Better to have loved and lost and all that. The books are just that good. ---

I’m reading through the series for the first time. Just started on book 4. So there’s no news about when book 5 will possibly come out? Is it on an indefinite hiatus? Edit - I didn’t find those pages until after I finished book 1. Unfortunate, but I survived. The appendices are absolutely necessary for 2 and 3, as they have even more characters. ---

I always take care not to even glance at the last few pages of a book for fear of spoilers, so I didn’t find that character index until after I had finished it. ---

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the only end I might see to this series is one provided by HBO. The fat fucking pervert (I got that from a Pit thread on him) is going to have a massive heart attack while masturbating to the thought of some scantily-costumed chick at some comic book convention. Oh, hey, you wrote another Dunk and Egg story! That’s great, you fat fucking asshole. Finish your goddamned book that you allegedly had finished five years ago. ---

By the third book, there wasn’t really much of a central plot left to resolve, so the fact that he’s going to die before he finishes the series doesn’t really bother me. Read the books like they’re a bunch of loosely related vignettes that take place in an interesting fantasy world. ---
