# Listening to Creed

Well, I just tried the search function and I understand it’s not quite up to snuff as yet. I found nothing.
I’m listening to Creed’s _Weathered_ album.
I like the metal edge, and the musicianship’s OK. Well, actually, pretty good.
I’ve always liked metal, since Zep, but often enough the lyrics have made me blanche. AC/DC is an embarrassment to anyone who’s ever owned an electric guitar.
I’m aware of Creed’s Christian rock beginnings, and I was born and raised atheist. Nevertheless, I find their tunes refreshingly clear of themes that call one to one side or the other. It’s kind of like, finally, metal I can like and not be embarrassed about lyrics.
Was I supposed to pose a question?

I’m not a huge fan but I like them. I prefer their slightly older material, like “Torn”, “My Own Prison”, and “Higher”, as opposed to their more current stuff, i.e. the “Weathered” album
Also, in case you’re unaware, Creed is the musical whipping boy that everyone takes great delight in bashing… you (and I, I suppose) are going to be mocked mercilessly for your musical tastes.

Are you _nuts_? Simple? Yeah. But it _rocks_. AC/DC (not my favorite band by any stretch) are masters of the three-chord hard rockin’ song. It may only be three chords, but they place those three with such conviction (and the guitars have such a great tone) that if you don’t get up and shake your ass to it, you simply don’t understand what makes rock music _rock_.
Creed? With Limp Bizkit they probably comprise the two most annoying bands in rock. But they’re such an easy, soft target that I won’t bother getting all indie pop snobsterish on y’all.

I think the guitar riffs are some fine arena-rock slabs. But the lyrics do kind of make me want to hurl.

Why don’t you just go straight to the source and listen to Pearl Jam instead?
Listening to Creed when there’s Pearl Jam available is like drinking cask wine when someone’s offering you a bottle of the finest vintage.

I think Gadfly nailed it, but I want to vent anyway. 😉 The words are wimpy Christian rock (although lately I get the impression they’re just doing average rock songs with less Jesus now), the singing and style are unashamed Pearl Jam ripoffs. I don’t like Pearl Jam much, so I’m not going to like a whinier PJ clone. Try some real music. AC/DCs lyrics are usually dumb, and their songs are simple. But they are what they are, meaning they didn’t steal all their tricks from a still-existant but slightly older band. And at least they rock.

I tried not to hate Creed. I really did. I always try my best not to completely loathe any band that is played as much as they are, since said loathing can prove inconvenient when one isn’t in control of the radio that they are listening to.
But I am only so strong.
Whenever my local rock station plays a song by Creed, I find it a jarring transition from whatever song was played before (unless the previous song was by Staind). It’s like if an adult contemporary station played Metallica every once in a while. It just doesn’t fit, y’know? Iron Maiden and Creed do not belong on the same station together, I’m sorry. And, **Ringo** , the only thing “metal” about Creed is the aluminum baseball bat that I’d like to beat Scott Stapp with.
And I’m no music snob. I own an N\*Sync album, for goodness’ sake.

I like some of Creed’s stuff. I certainly don’t hate them the way some people here do. They’re okay. Not great, but okay.

There you go then. I count Nirvana and Pearl Jam among my favorite bands and am also a fan of STP, Alice in Chains, and grunge in general.

Personally, I think Creed’s lyrics embarrass everyone who ever lived. They’re glurge, and they just plain suck. If you want some _good_ religion-inspired lyrics with a metal edge, I suggest Thrice. If you just want a different kind of lyrics with a fairly easy-to-listen-to sound, I suggest HIM and their ‘love metal.’ The lead singer is from Finland and he can still write better English lyrics than Scott Stapp.
(In case you’re wondering, my intense hatred of Creed in this case derives primarily from the fact that my little sister owns one of their albums and I was forced to listen to it over and over on car trips. I almost gouged out my own eardrums. It’s not just musical snobbery. I would much rather have been listening to NSYNC; at least their songs are catchy.)

I _was_ unaware. OK, so Pearl Jam and Thrice are are supposed to convince me that Creed’s to be wooed away from? Well, I’ll give’em a listen.
