Thomas Wolfe, the American author of the 1930s — not Tom Wolfe — had his work extensively edited by his Scribner’s editor, **[Maxwell Perkins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell_Perkins)**, who performed the same office for other famous authors.  
Mr. Perkins claimed no copyright on anything he did as Scribner’s editor.
