Thomas Wolfe, the American author of the 1930s — not Tom Wolfe — had his work extensively edited by his Scribner’s editor, Maxwell Perkins, who performed the same office for other famous authors.
Mr. Perkins claimed no copyright on anything he did as Scribner’s editor.
