> There actually were a few episodes where he shut Harriet up right quick when she went too far. And there was one episode (when he was trying to make a living selling his stock as a traveling salesman) where he tried to transfer ownership of his gonads to another woman (the woman who ran the boardinghouse he stayed in in the big city) but overheard her playing lovey-dovey with another salesman (turned out she really DID say that to all the boys) and slunk back to the old battleship.
> snip).

Did you mean “Battle-ax”?

One ep. that really stuck in my craw was the one where Almanzo was telling Laura and the fam about his own fam back in the day, and how his father taught Al’s brother, Royal, a hard lesson because Royal had been telling the younger kids there was no Santa. On Christmas morning, “Santa” delivered a bunch of gifts but there was nothing at all for Royal.
My God, I thought that was incredibly mean-spirited and not uplifting at all.

Pretty much everything about that show was irritating to me. Tried a number of times but couldn’t make it through an episode

Nope. Battleship…the kind that was around then, with all the sails. That’s what Harriet always reminded me of, a battleship under full sail with a strong wind abaft.

This was the thing that bothered me most of all.

And somebody mentioned Laura teaching after marriage, that was stupid too. It just wasn’t done, at least in the country, until decades later. My grandmother was a teacher at a one room school in 1926, when she got married. She wanted to keep her job until the end of the term, so she and my grandfather married in secret, and lived separately, until then. The two previous teachers at the school had had to quit when they married, and they were married to older brothers of my grandfather. The superintendent was heard to say “We won’t be able to keep a teacher until all the Lietz boys get married.”

Pa Ingalls bought the the little house in Walnut Grove in the first episode, but the only one to actually fix up the house was a handy man who had the hotts for Ma Ingalls, while pa was away. (this was a real episode).

My wife always comments about the house when ever we watch the show.

But the thing that bothered me about that Bell was it totally disappeared in later episodes. When they blew up the town in the episode The Last Farewell and the Reverend rings the bell, there is a close up of the bell and it is an old marked up silver bell. Not a bit of bronze on it. It is a different shaped bell too!!! Why couldn’t they have stayed with the bell Tinker Jones made??? What happened to the bronze bell???

This thread is originally from 2005, with a minor resurrection in 2016, the year of your only other post on the board. What made you resurrect it? And did you know question marks don’t expire, even if you buy a ten-pack?

I hated Nellie’s face. Not (just) her rotten personality but her literal _face_. Bravo to the casting director.
On a related note, it took me a couple of GoT eps to realize why I hate Joffrey so much (I mean besides the obvious reasons). They have the same hateable face. [Apparently I’m not the only once who thinks so](https://www.google.com/search?q=nellie+oleson+and+king+joffrey&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS821US821&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjE9fnJqKDiAhWQ1lkKHQxaCiUQ_AUIDigB&biw=1603&bih=798).

When I was doing historical reenactment, a colleague who was very knowledgeable about such things complained about how they used all kinds of things that “only looked old-timey.” One example that sticks in my mind is the swinging bar doors often seen in Westerns. He said the technology for that (double hinges, I assume) wasn’t around until many years later.

In the made-for-TV movie, the first time Laura and Almonzo had sex was outdoors. Like that would happen. However, the book where they got married, end with their spending their wedding night sitting on the porch.

Hey, the Victorians were a very randy lot, far randier than popular culture now depicts them. Vicky herself set the standard by popping out babies one after the other. She enjoyed making them, but hated having to care for them.

A lot of the period’s literature was downright pornographic, but you never see it reproduced\* today.

\*No pun intended. :o
