The Sound of Music is the one movie I hate more than any other film. I will not be watching a remake.
No I couldn’t stand the original, see no reason to watch a copy.
I have programmed the DVR and will at least start to watch it.
I don’t have high hopes, but the cast looks good and I have never seen the stage production, just the film (ages ago).
Gutsy that they are even trying to air this, so I guess I can at least give it a chance.
True, but Martin performed it first on Broadway, IIRC.
From Wikipedia, people who played Maria before Julie Andrews:
Broadway:
Mary Martin
Martha Wright
Karen Gantz
Nancy Dussult
National Tour:
Florence Henderson
Barbara Meister
London:
Jean Bayless
Sonia Rees
I recognized the face of Von Trapp but I couldn’t figure out who it was until I looked it up on the Internets.
Vampire Bill is playing Von Trapp.
This is intriguing, and I am also intrigued by the live aspect of it. I don’t think that I’m going to be watching this though.
Except for a few songs (“Edelweiss” was my Swiss grandmother’s favorite song, and I love “My Favorite Things” even if it gets mislabeled as a Christmas song), TSOM is not my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein score. South Pacific, The King and I, and Carousel are R & H’s three greatest as far as I am concerned. So this live remake doesn’t really stir me one way or the other.
OK, I checked BigT’s link to the title song, and I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it’s definitely inferior to Julie Andrews-- I lack the musical sophistication to say just how, but it seems to have less… thickness? Substance? Something along those lines. On the other hand, it’s perhaps unfair to Underwood to compare her to Andrews, since very, very few singers are as good as Andrews was, and judged on its own merits, Underwood’s performance is still good.
I didn’t know people were so ready to hate on The Sound of Music.
I’ll give it a go. This is just another production. Lots of people have played the part and Carrie Underwood has a good voice. I expect the rest of the cast will be up to snuff too.
Well, the hills are alive…

I’m sure Carrie Underwood is fine, but if I want Sound of Music, I’ll watch The Sound of Music.
I was going to say she was cute, but sure, yeah, she’s fine. I can’t argue with that.
Who sings the Hitler part?

Replace King with Oklahoma! and I agree 100%. TSoM has songs that are mostly earwigs–superficially catchy but lyrically shallow compared to the work that preceded it.
I’ll at least start watching it. If I remember.
I voted no. i want Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel or Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer thank you very much.
My wife and I will be watching. Looking forward to it.
Y’know, the big asset of a live performance is the give-and-take with the audience.
This is – lacking.

True. And I’m having a hell of a time buying Carrie Underwood as a naive Austrian nun wannabe. Her voice is great, to be sure, but I’m not sure I’ll finish watching this.
She’s not much of an actress – but there’s not all that much acting involved.
Where are the microphones? Is this lip-synched?

I was wondering this, but there was one brief point (during the Doe, a deer number) that Underwood clearly got a tad winded, so I don’t think it is. No idea where the mics are.
Woo hoo! Christian Borle!
