[This thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=421868) explains what we’re doing. In a nutshell, we’re taking a key moment in history and posting as if it were happening live. We’re going to try to keep this “in the moment” as it were, so try not to apply 20/20 hindsight to the situation. Anybody old enough to have experienced the event is encouraged to post, to keep us straight and to share their memories of the event. If this goes well, we’ll explore other key moments in history. I don’t think the Soviets are capable of doing something like this: they can’t even feed their own people, and used up a lot of their resources getting Yuri Gagarin into space. I think it’s more likely to be the CIA or the FBI. ---
