This is _exactly_ what my roommates and I have just gone through. I’ve been here 7+ years, the guy whose name is on the lease has been here more than 10 years. We learned last September or October that the owner hadn’t been paying the mortgage with the rent we’d been paying. The house went into foreclosure, and at the end of December it went on the auction block (and failed to sell apparently). In any case, on Jan. 10 we were given until March 10 to be out.

EDIT: That should be _April_ 10. We qualified for some government program that will pay us money for relocation expenses if we can get out sooner, and we chose the “Within 60 days” option.

I’m pretty sure her angle is more “unable” than “unwilling” due to lack of money and options. But I :dubious: for a moment at that part, too.

You “don’t understand”? Really? The concept that being dirt poor and having limited options as to where to move, plus the enormous hassle of packing up and whatnot, and the thought of leaving a long-term domicile could _possibly_ outweigh the desire to not cost him money is something you don’t understand?

Actually, I should apologize for asking rhetorical questions with the intent to make a broader point. That was a pretty dick move on my part. I shouldn’t be such a sanctimonious prick.

Can’t she just promise she’ll be out by a certain time (even how long eviction would take), so he doesn’t have to go through the process?

Honestly, the way it is written, no I don’t understand. She makes it sound like she _can’t_ leave unless there’s an eviction. She can leave at any time. An eviction isn’t necessary.

If he’s a nice guy sure, but if they have a handshake then all he is doing is delaying the formal eviction notice, delaying the start of eviction. You either evict someone or you dont, as far as I understand it.
