Neighbors call cops on [12 year old black kid](https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-news/neighbor-calls-police-over-family-delivering-papers-in-upper-arlington/1292271082) delivering newspapers. White man deliberately ran over[Jason Numley](https://triblive.com/local/allegheny/13849247-74/north-versailles-man-charged-for-driving-through-antwon-rose-protesters)during the Antwon Rose protests. Other white folks carefully considered the evidence will charge him with a misdemeanor. This one gets an honorable mention: Virginia lawmaker,[Rep. Scott Taylor](https://pilotonline.com/news/government/politics/virginia/article_27c35caa-8120-11e8-8d40-7b16b368467c.html), insists he can’t be racist because his son is named after a black man. The name? Sterling. Not exactly the blackest name there is. But alright. ---

I grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s in what would now be called the “Greater Silicon Valley” area of California. Our community wasn’t one of the wealthiest but it was above median, and for most of 12 years, 1st-grade to 12th-grade, AFAIK there wasn’t a single black student ever enrolled in our school district. (Black home-seekers were steered away by realtors.) So we witnessed very little anti-black discrimination: there were zero blacks to discriminate against! My mother, bless her heart, insisted we make friends with a black family who lived literally on the other side of the railroad tracks. They had a boy my age and I remember hearing that he came home one day in tears and tried to scrub the black color off his skin with soap. Recently I’ve been reading so many many heart-rending stories, like those OP mentions. Are things getting worse? Or is reporting just more thorough now? I fear that the ascendancy of Trump (and Republicans more generally) has empowered bigots to express their hatreds. There have been threads like “Is American Civil War possible?” and Dopers reply, “No, not in OUR country.” But I cannot be sanguine: when violence comes it can come very suddenly. ---
