You know, the radio in my truck hasn’t worked for a while (since the antenna, um, “fell off”), and so I haven’t heard any current music in a few years. Just recently I accidentally surfed into MTV, where I was shocked and horrified to see some idiot on stage doing his most heartfelt Eddie Vedder impersonation. Is this really current? Does the Pearl Jam-style “alternative” STILL rule the airwaves? (Aside from the hip-hop explosion, I mean.) Seriously, I’m so out of touch that I still think the Pixies are cutting-edge, and even I know these chumps are imitating something that was _never_ cool; and setting aside notions of “cool,” it hasn’t even been _current_ since 1997 or so. Is this just some massive failing of popular taste? What the hell’s going on here? Why haven’t bands found some brand-new way to suck, like they did back when I was your age? (Dammit. I just _knew_ that phrase was gonna slip out.) ---

I got a car without a radio recently and I haven’t listened to MTV or popular radio in a few years either. From the few times I’ve been exposed to it, the current music on rock stations still seems to be forth generation grunge, taking the worst of grunge, nu-metal, techno-metal, and emo and smushing it all together into a Creedy ball of bland faux-angsty poppiness. By comparison, Local H were true rock visionaries. The latest truly new thing I _heard_ on the radio was Stabbing-Westward style nu-metal techno-rock blend in the late 90s. And it was a steaming pile of crap. (Nu-metal had already been done by early 90s rap-rock: ditto for emo and early 90s indie.) ---

One of the perks of being a cop is having to work concerts. You get to bust shit heads **AND** listen to good music. But about 5 years ago I was working a concert in which L.H. was one of the opening acts. I clearly remember telling my Captain that I was going to file a comp claim for having to listen to that!😛 ---

I would say Dave Mathews Band would count as alty (until VCO descides to rewrite the rules again) that have several black members if I remember clearly. No Doubt also had a black back up horn section when they played live and the dude that Gwen was hung up on and inspired all their songs is distinctly non-white. ---

Having spent too many years as a music critic, I call honestly tell you that the honor of worst band of all time should be qualified: Worst band of all time that never got a record deal? Worst band that self-released their own bad records? Worst bar band that only did covers in local bars? Worst band that had a record released that went nowhere, that hardly anyone ever heard? Worst band that is so generic or derivative or a sound-alike, signed by a record company to try and compete with a great band that helps define a genre, that after you hear them you almost immediately forget what you just heard? Worst band whose music is just unlistenable self-indulgent noise? Believe me there are countless hundreds of thousands of worse bands than Local H, and most of them you’ve never heard. ---

I would have to take VCO3’s side here. Put Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Local H, and Pearl Jam all in a row and then rotate DMB, No Doubt, and Sevendust as the sixth band. They would, in all three cases, be the one that doesn’t fit. Sevendust is a metal band that I first heard of in comparison to Pantera, No Doubt was a ska/pop band (back then), and DMB has their own folky/rootsy/DMBy sound. ---
