I’m sure these hotels recommendations are great, but it seems to me they’re all right in the centre of London, and right next to Zone 1 Tube stations. That has got to be eye-wateringly expensive. Personally I wouldn’t even consider accommodation in such prime spots, it’s bound to be a rip-off. There must be good, reasonably priced hotels convenient for Zone 2 stations, surely? That would only be fiteeen minutes more on the Tube, if that.
Well, I appreciate all the advice on getting to Amsterdam but I found an astounding deal in Orbitz for $20 flights. With taxes and fees (OMG!) it still comes in under $400 US for all four of us on British Airways. I don’t have any idea why they are so cheap, and there don’t seem to be any restrictions other than change/cancellation, so I won’t complain.
It sounds as if the concensus is Hyde Park so I will start again there. Thank you!
No one has recommended any, have they?
I am not against spending time on the Tube. Both my children spent the bulk of their lives living in New York City so, though they now reside in suburbia, are comfortable with public transportation. I do need a full-service hotel at the very minimum as my husband will be working while there.
Sorry, I rarely venture that far inwards .
For a modern hotel set up for business, you could try something at Canary Wharf. It’s zone 2, has tube links (Jubilee extension therefore relatively clean, modern and spacious), DLR (Docklands Light Rail) plus Thames Clipper Ferries which will take you past the same sights as on a tourist boat but cheaper.
Yeah, cool - demand based pricing for the win! Mind, you’ll only be in the air for about forty minutes. If you’ve never been to Schipol before, it’s a very clearly and logically laid out airport (plus everyone speaks English ) and the railway station is just underneath the main hub part of the terminal building. Have a great holiday!
Does anyone know anything about The Chesterfield Mayfair? It has excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and looks to be somewhat close to Hyde Park, I think. Map.
Thank you, I am very excited! We’re going to Paris after Amsterdam too. All told, it’s going to be about 16 days of travelling.
I bet we’ll be at each other’s throats by the time it’s over.
When we lived in New York, we rarely ventured that far inwards also. The tourists are maddening.
And forty queueing for take-off at Heathrow, don’t forget
I agree, getting it at that price for a whole family pretty much seals the deal. Which airport is it actually from? And also agreed that Schipol is a nice place, especially as it’s so well laid-out for transfers and as a result so open and easy to navigate.
British Airways # 438
London Heathrow (LHR) to Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS)
Total trip cost: $389.96 USD
I want to live in a place where I can afford to visit a different country every weekend. Trust me, even though I’ve never been there, I bet Amsterdam is much more interesting that the cities I can get to for $100.
Can’t disagree there! And with subway-savvy kids, Heathrow is probably going to be a good option, pretty much wherever you end up actually staying in relation to tube stations.
Unless you live a commuter flight away from Sodom and Gomorrah, I bet you’re right! (Joking Hamsterdopers, just joking!)
