I was a fan of the columns. I searched for a source for the columns and found the site and started posting very soon after. I’d been on a lot of message boards in the years prior so it was easy. It was a good lesson on never meet your heroes but also by far my biggest online time sink over the past 23 years. ---

My join date was April 8, 1999. I had just gotten the latest Straight Dope book and it mentioned comment made in the forum. I did a search and found the new forum right after they had moved. But I didn’t create a login until I had an ISP - I was in the middle of betting rid of my ex ---

I learned about the Straight Dope from the [short-lived TV series](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398574/?ref_=fn_all_ttl_2) that aired in 1996. I bought a bunch of the books not long after it went off the air. Episode 1 is available on [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KThN-7DRgkg)! ---
