A lot of familiar oldies are showing up this week - Brenda Lee hitting number 1 for the first time since the 1960’s. Billboard has changed the rules over the years - not just physical records/CDs sold, but streams, downloads, etc. as well.

Billboard’s rule for decades was that Christmas songs were only eligible for the Hot 100 in the year of their release. They rescinded that rule in 2019, which is why the Christmas standards from the '50s are now able to chart every December when certain radio stations play them to death.

It’s also why “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has topped the charts every December since then.

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was on the Billboard charts in 1960, 1961, and 1962. When did they start disallowing Christmas songs in multiple years?

1963, funny enough.

> Beginning with the issue dated November 30, 1963, Billboard magazine no longer charted Christmas albums or singles on its existing music charts. For the next 10 years, these titles could only be found in their new annual best-selling Christmas Records section (retitled Billboard Top Christmas Sellers in 1965 and then Billboard Best Bets for Christmas in 1966 through 1973).\[A\] The 5-position survey ranking of top-selling Christmas Singles\[B\] and Christmas LP's\[C\] ran for 3–5 weeks each ho The And...

> Billboard, in an effort to allow the chart to remain as current as possible and to give representation to new and developing artists and tracks, has (since 1991) removed titles that have reached certain criteria regarding its current rank and number of weeks on the chart. Recurrent criteria have been modified several times and currently (as of 2015\[update\]), a song is permanently moved to "recurrent status" if it has spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 and fallen below position number 50.
