Looking for a good heavy-duty hand cleaner (not Zep, see post for reasons)

^ Do you ever wonder what stuff would look like if they didn’t include D&C Yellow No.10, Iron Oxide or Chromium Hydroxide Green?

lava soap was my father’s go to, he was a mechanic.

So I stopped at an Autozone store and looked at what they had. They had Fast Orange, another product I had never heard of that had walnut shells, and a third product I had never heard of with a safe list of ingredients, so I picked it up. It’s in a blue bottle, and it’s called Scott Shop Hand Cleaner.

I like it. Mainly because the consistency is lighter and less gloppy than Zep. It has fine particles of pumice in it, and it stays on me until I rinse it off, instead of dropping unused globs into the sink before I can rub my hands together. It has a mild scent of something I can’t identify. Apparently this is the Scott that makes those blue paper shop towels, and other paper products. It seems to only come in 16-oz. bottles but that’s OK. Recommended.

To be clear, it’s not a Scott Paper product, it’s a company called Scott Car Care. They sell this product and three kinds of paper shop towels and cloth rags.

Glad you found something allergen-free. I might pick up a bottle when I use up my monster-sized container.

An aside: Straight Dope column from 1977 about barn paint; one ingredient is iron oxide (rust) which gave barns their red color.

I use Gojo Original waterless hand cleaner. I keep it out in the barn along with paper towels. After I work on the tractor I’ll use the stuff and it is amazing how well it cleans and how nice it leaves my hands feeling. There’s no abrasive.

Yesterday I went to a doctor’s office for the first time in half a year. They had people using hand sanitizer, and the perfume in it was horrible. It wouldn’t wash off afterwards and was irritating my throat, even though I kept washing my hands and cleaning them with alcohol. Last night in desperation I braved the cold rain to go out to the barn and use the Gojo, and it took the perfume right off – what a relief!

This stuff is GREAT! I wonder if I can shampoo with it…

Yes, I finally found the ingredients for Gojo orange, and they’re OK for me. I might try it when I run out of the Scott product. The Supra product, on the other hand, has walnut shells (disguised with their latin name, the bastards).

Pix would be required for research purposes.

The guys in our warehouse are working with grease all day. Our slop sink has Orange Goop, Dawn dish soap, regular dish soap, a scrub brush and a nail brush (brush for nails not made of nails).
