Is it possible to find out the name of a company when you only have a few initials from a person’s email address, ie. josh@\_ \_ \_.com?

Go to [http://www.samspade.org](http://www.samspade.org) and do a whois on the name of the domain (the part to the right of the @ sign). You’ll get all sorts of interesting information.
Sam Spade, by the way, is an excellent way to track down spammers, either through their website or by downloading their free software.
