Looking for films with heroic/brave girls

Lilo and Stitch

I came in to recommend this.

I also think Ever After would probably qualify… it’s a Cinderella story, but she’s pretty bad-ass.

Battle for Terra
The Princess and the Frog
Monsters vs Aliens
The Rescuers
The Next Karate Kid (1994)

I translated ‘girls’ as ‘females’. :smack:

Hocus Pocus.

Heartily seconded. The girls in this movie are so unbelievably strong and courageous.

Of course she is, bravery isn’t the absence of fear that’s usually stupidity. Katniss does some terrifying things that’s she’s sure she won’t survive in order to protect her family. If you’re looking for these as object lessons for a little girl I’m not sure it’s one I’d want my daughter to emulate but I hope the situation never arises

This. +1

Does Joan of Arc count as a girl or a woman?

In The Last Unicorn, the unicorn is female, and quite old…but she does overcome her fear. If you’re looking for a positive female role model for little girls, most of them will like this movie. In fact, you might not be able to get them to quit watching it.

There have been other great suggestions, I was just thinking back to when my daughter was pretty small, and the movies that she loved.

If at all possible, read *Howl’s Moving Castle *before (or instead of) watching the film. I read that book to my daughter, and it’s one of the reasons that she started reading for pleasure.

Surprisingly good. I happened upon it on one of the movie channels and got dawn in. I had never heard of it.

Rob Reiner wrote and directed, and the nostalgia vibe is similar to Stand By Me.

Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet.

Lots of people have mentioned Studio Ghibli films, but have left out Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, and Laputa, which are probably the most action-oriented of Miyzaki’s films. And Kiki’s Delivery Service.

In America
Not One Less

Chocolate - a Thai martial arts movie about an autistic teenage girl who learns to fight by watching Kung Fu movies. The story is appropriately silly, but the fight scenes are pretty awesome. Imagine a young, female Jackie Chan. Lots of stylized violence, and the blooper reel during the credits will have you wincing.

It is rated R, though, so you might want to preview before watching with any young’uns.

Re: Flipped–I really enjoyed this movie…thanks to the folks who recommended it!

Thought of another: City of Ember

Features a heroic girl, but also worth watching for Bill Murray’s turn as the mayor.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Hanna.

For five minutes or so?
