In particular, I am looking for software that supports the following:[ul][li]Screenshots of regions or windows[\*]Ability to add text, circles, and arrows[/ul]Doesn’t have to be free, though I’m not buying a $500 tool for this.[/li]
I have been using a tool called Gadwin Printscreen for years, but that one (and the other free ones I can find) only do basic screenshots and don’t do markup.

I am now using a demo version of [Captus](http://www.softario.com/captus.html), and I like it; however, I would like to try others if there are better ones out there.

What would be your recommendations?

Assuming you are using a Windows O/S, you can do the screen/Window capturing for free using the key combinations of \<CTRL\>-PrtSc and \<ALT\>-PrtSc along with [GIMP](http://www.gimp.org/) freeware.

Just to clarify my position…

I have been doing the workflow you describe for many years and I’m a little tired of having to switch between apps for this. I have Photoshop installed on my machine. I also have freeware screenshot software that does a better and easier job than using PrtSc.

I would like a polished software product that allows me to quickly create screenshots, annotate them, and save them without needing to switch between products.

It’s fine if you are creating one or two, but imagine writing a software manual where you might need dozens or hundreds of screenshots. Or imagine putting together screenshots for submitting bug reports, where you might want to add annotations quickly without having to launch other tools.

I assume you’re needing this for annotating non-browser-based software, right?

If you were just needing something for a browser, [Fireshot](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5648) is really nice for Firefox.

We use [SnagIt](http://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.asp).

SnagIt is great. I use the freebie MWSnap which is pretty good but not as slick.

Thanks!
I have downloaded Snagit, and it looks pretty sweet.

I installed Captus on one machine and Snagit on the other. Let’s see how they compare over the next couple of weeks.

I work at a major aerospace manufacturer and we use [HyperSnap](http://www.hyperionics.com/). It does all you are asking for and even captures editable text from a region. You can even add color highlighting to your capture.

I’m another fan of Snagit. Additions should be accomplished via something like MS Paint, or other drawing program.

I use PrintKey 2000 (gotta look for the free version) on Windows, just because I’m not willing to look for anything else. It does what I need it to, though.
