Here’s a link to the [British Legion](http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/), the charity who sell the poppies, which should shed some more light on it. Every politician and TV host wears them for about two weeks leading up to 11/11/11 (and the general public, obviously).

You are quite welcome.
I have a friend who makes them out of beads and wire instead of paper, I can’t remember the name of the technique but it is 17 and 18th century french and quite pretty.
