I’m wondering how the convenience store clerk knew who bought the winning ticket. Even if Hurley was buying the same numbers every week, the clerk wouldn’t necessarily know, or notice, or remember, what they were, would he?

I figured that it would last them about 3 days if they ate 3 meals a day. A week or a few days extra if they ate one meal a day. They could stretch it out longer possibly, but they’d still have to hunt and gather to supplement their food.

That’s my guess. All the food back there was vacuum packed, canned and sealed. I didn’t notice any fresh foods anywhere, and milk for his cereal could easily have come from milk powder (_gags_ only good for baking IMO).

I have to shout out on the best reference of the episode. Hurley tells his friend to promise never to change. Friend says sonmething like, “Oh, I’ll stay golden, Ponyboy.”\*
I laughed so hard I spit.
\*Reference: _The Outsiders_ by SE Hinton. A character named Ponyboy was obsessed with the Robert Frost poem, _Nothing Gold Can Stay_.

This somewhat bothered me too. Even if Hurley played those same numbers every week (I don’t recall his back story well enough to remember if that was the first time he tried playing those numbers or not) with a ticket from the same Gas’n’Go with the same cashier, the cashier shouldn’t remember Hurley’s numbers anymore than anyone else who has “special” numbers, unless the cashier is Rain Man. I guess the best explanation is that they knew when the ticket was purchased, so they went back and looked at the survaillence camera tapes and recognized Hurley that way.
I was also bothered at why his friend was so pissed. It’s not as if Hurley asked him to quit the CluckHut with him…

So, what’s the count on our guys from the front of the plane? Is it 42?
4 8 15 16 23 42.
Six numbers. Six hatches/installations. Is it always in equilibrium? If one group gets too small it joins up with another group to get them back to the right number and then another bunch gets beached/crashed/whatever’d?
The Tail group’s hatch looked a whole lot less nice than the one that our Front group found.
Anyways, what was Desmond going to do in 3 months…?

I also thought that the people on the boat may be the original scientists…The old guy who did all the talking (“Bluebeard” to Sawyer) and the blonde woman who threw the molotov cocktail could be Gerald and Karen DeGrut (sp?)…The Dharma Initiative was their brainchild according to Dr. Candle.
Also, the film mentions 5 areas of study: Meteorology, Psychology, Parapsychology, Zoology, and Electromagnetism…The Swan is station 3 of 6, researching the "unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island”…assuming (I know it’s taboo to assume, but…) that each station has a focus on one of these fields, that’s only a total of 5…what’s the sixth station researching then??
Does everyone agree that…the 2 man team assigned to Station 3 were assigned AFTER the incident since the incident is mentined on the film…and not as researchers…the researchers probably were evacuated, whether they did or not is another story.
Someone asked in a previous post (sorry I don’t remember who), if Rousseau’s team were the researchers on the island…I don’t think they were because Rousseau says that her and her team changed course responding to the numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) being repeated on a transmission…she goes on to say that they were 3 days out of Tahiti when the storm hit and they ran aground on the island…she eventually changed the transmission to the distress call that our surviviors heard.
Two more thoughts…the Gas’n’Go attendant who recognized Hurley as the Lotto winner was the same guy in the chicken suit in his dream, right??
And…does anyone think that that was Kate sitting at a table, munching on a chicken sandwich during the flashback, right before Hurley gets called into the office?? It may not be, it’s hard to tell, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

There were six areas of study, the five you mentioned plus “utopian social systems”.
Oh, for everyone who is saying they are tired of all the flashbacks and want more focus on the mysteries of the Island. Well, I’m afraid that isn’t going to happen. J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, the producers, have said that they consider this show to be about the characters first and the island mysteries second. In fact, they say that the people focusing on the island mysteries are a minority of their viewers. Cites:

I don’t know if someone already answered this but one thing puzzled me last night. Hurley said that there was 3 months of food for one guy left in the bunker…but it seemed to me the shelves were pretty full. I didn’t see a vast and mostly empty store room somewhere indicating that there had been a lot more food in the past. So…if its true that there was only 3 months of food for 1 guy in the bunker how did Desmond (and partner before) survive there for years? Are the bunkers being resupplied with food or something?
Appologies if this has already been addressed…I haven’t read through the entire thread.
