Speaking of Tom, were we ever given a reason why he was wearing a fake beard? What possible purpose could that have served, since none of the 815ers knew who he was?

I think it was because they wanted the Losties to think The Others were primitive, rough, unkempt natives. Not civilized people with razors and shaving cream and running water. So they messed up his hair and gave him a huge beard to hide behind.
It makes sense to me… I’m not sure this is a “mystery” that needs to be solved.

Right – it was all part of the grubby, grungy, barefoot in the woods costume getups. Kate found the locker with the costumes and the fake beards and stage glue. It was the image they were trying to project, rather than the “we live in a suburban village with electricity, running water, and nice clean clothes” truth of things.

Although, from the look of Richard Alpert when he first met Ben, these weren’t merely costumes - they were how the island natives actually dressed before they “purged” Dharma and stole all their modern goodies.
I imagine that also explains the primitive village where they held Michael at the end of season 2 - it makes little sense that people living in modern homes would go so far as to create a whole village just to fool someone. But if it was already there, then populating it for a little while is actually a reasonable amount of effort to achieve that end.

Not quite. Richard was dressed rather “primitively”, but his clothes weren’t torn and he wasn’t dirty. The Others first presented themselves to our Losties as basically being in rags. Except, of course, Ethan and Goodwin-- who blended in just fine.

In fact, although I’m no expert in period clothing, Richard’s clothes looked like they were 18th century, early 19th century. Could be the original hostiles came in from the Black Rock?
Of course, I also suck at theorizing for this show, but hey.

Could be. Of course, even if they were from the BR, they probably weren’t the “original” hostiles. I’m thinking we’d have to go back at least 2,000 years to find them (remember the 4-toed statue). It could be that successive waves of people came to the island, found it’s magical properties to be worth hanging around for, and fought against whatever new arrivals there have been. Of course, that doesn’t explain how the latest "natives’ have such strong links to the outside world that they can send out recruiters, or get “detailed files” on people so easily.

Ben? He left the world at a young age, but he must have had at least some working knowledge of the Dharma institution, even just being a Work Man. He probably would have been able to figure out how to get back to the world and wanted to lead the hostiles on some quixotic expedition, perhaps to find Locke or someone like him.
