Best line of the night was when Charlie said: “Right, I’m supposed to stand guard in case you devolve into a monkey.” Nice, esoteric little “Altered States” reference there…
I’m unclear on how recently Hurley had returned to the beach. I got the impression that these first three episodes were happening concurrently, and the further impression that Hurley was still finding his way back when Locke stabbed his canteen.
I heard ([cite](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Further_Instructions#Trivia)) that the previous episode (The Glass Ballerina) was originally planned to be shown before this episode. So, yes, it seems these things are happening concurrently.

It just struck me today: the writers planned to show Locke lowering his gun and letting his target escape, to better contrast it with Sun’s gun-pointing scenario with a decidedly different outcome! That’s cool.

Regardless, I’m still looking forward to a half-decent explanation of the animated smoke and Tree-Crushing Monster.

It seemed that “Why didn’t you tell us?!” could reasonably have been answered with, “Because I just now got here.”
Locke sent him to the beach and told him to tell the others. Then Locke had the adventure with the bear, rescued Eko, tried to revive Eko, and then Locke and Charlie carried Eko to the beach. Hurley got there first–not clear how much sooner, but first.

Except I believe those two have been promoted from redshirt to series regulars. New characters for season 3, I believe I read somewhere.

Lot of good that did Ana Lucia and Libby, though.

Random theory #1
Some guy on the radio this morning threw out the theory that Desmond actually died in the hatch. I like this for a few reasons:

- He’s naked (how would an implosion remove your clothes?).
- John (who has visions of dead people) and Hurley (who has been known to talk to illusionary people) are the only two people who react to him at all, even in a crowded camp.
- He sees the future.

I don’t really believe it’s the case, but it’s an intriguing thought, isn’t it? 😃

Random theory #2
Perhaps Locke’s paralysis and muteness were both psychosomatic? It would explain how they come and go, and yet he’s obviously not faking them.
1. Since when does a polar bear drag its intended meal into a cave and tie him up before tearing at him? Every nature special I’ve ever seen with polar bears, the polar bears just tear into dinner, manners be damned.
That part reminded me of the wampa scene in The Empire Strikes Back. I wonder if they got the idea from there or something.

Well, I’m pretty much giving up on Lost. I’ll stick it out until the break but I don’t have high hopes of seeing anything that’ll make me come back.

This episode was it. We’re three episodes into this season and the previous two were a plotline that effectively did nothing for the show’s ongoing story. This episode had to give something regarding the piles of questions left over from just the finale last season and they gave us absolutely nothing. Less than nothing since it just adds another layer of questions to the existing ones.

Idealy a show like Lost needs to be constructed with some give and take. Set up big mysteries and plan to resolve them over a period of seasons. Then add little mysteries that relate to the big ones that can arise and be dealt with. Every episode doesn’t have to answer a question but there has to be at least a feeling of advancement for the story. We have hit the point where I don’t have that feeling any more.

Hmm, the “Desmond as dead” theory is interesting. That’ll have to be chewed on for a while.

Something just hit me, during Locke’s little vision quest, did I see Sawyer lifting something (as in stealing) from Kate’s pocket or bag?

To me, it looked like Kate and Sawyer were traveling together, and he just pulled their boarding passes out of her purse so he could give them to Ben.
