Couple quick thoughts about the statue. When I first saw the still image it looked to me like the statue has a cane in each hand and it’s resting it’s weight on those canes as if it had an issue with it’s legs. My first reaction was that it’d be Locke since he’s been treated like some type of god figure for the island and I can see him ending up being worshiped by the natives, that and that he’s always had issues with his legs. Of course that doesn’t explain the 4 toes or the fact that he looks like Anubis. Since the donkey wheel seems to teleport people to Tunisia it’s probably just a old Egyptian statue that somehow connects the island to ancient Egypt.

Actually, after looking at the still posted earlier, I believe the statue is holding an onkh.

Also, I have to defend myself a little bit, going back to the first page of the thread

I know Daniel (skinny tie guy) loved Charlotte. I also know he told her as a girl not to come back to the island, yet she did and died. I made the supposition that he must have been her father or some sort of trusting adult figure, although Charlotte didn’t like him in the past. Maybe I missed something. Otherwise he’s creepier than I thought – or maybe just a good guy. Or, I’m stupid. Whatever works best for commentators.

The Egyptian goddess who you prayed to for protection in pregnancy and childbirth. That would really tie in nicely.

That is a MUCH better fit than Anubis. It seemed clear to me that the statue did not have a staff in its left hand, as Anubis does. But this Twaret character seems to match.

I’m thinking it’s some sort of combo of multiple Egyptian gods. The doubles ankhs and the hat match Taweret, but the body and hair match Anubis.

I don’t think you’re stupid, but I don’t understand why he would have to be her dad in order not to be creepy. Can you explain that?

> But see it’s not that convoluted. It really only seems convoluted when we come up with these crazy theories about changing the past and so on.
> We have one rule: What happened, happened, and you can’t change the past. Now I know what you are about to say, “But Daniel could be lying, and then he changed the past!” Well, we have no reason to think he’s lying, because he’s been a pretty honest guy.

You’re missing a possiblity–he could be _wrong_! 🙂

Happens all the time. Look at “N-Rays” and “Polywater” for just two examples of scientists with the best intentions who got stuff wrong.

The only hard fact/experimental data we have is that the _only_ time we’ve seen someone try to change the past…_it worked_. Daniel told pre-Swan Explosion Desmond something and _POOF_ suddenly Post-Rescue Desmond had a new bit of information he did NOT have prior to Daniel’s attempt. Right there, the statement “What happened, happened” stops being an immutable law of time travel to “Not so much a law, really..more of a general guideline.”

We’ve never seen another attempt, so we have no other data–but the single experiment we’ve seen contradicted Daniel’s hypothesis 100%.

And, sadly, when confronted with that data, rather than behave like a scientist should (“Hm…this worked where my hypothesis said it wouldn’t. I should reexamine my hypothesis”), he acted like most people and said “Huh–musta been a fluke.”

Not the way I remember it. To my recollection, he explained that he thought Desmond was different, presumably because Desmond has been unstuck in time. That thought was what inspired Daniel to try what he tried with Desmond.

In a sense, but once he became unstuck, he floated back to times before he had been on the island, so the span of his unstuckedness included the time that Daniel saw him in the hatch.

Here’s a theory to chew on: in the old testament, Benjamin is a son of Jacob, and Benjamin’s mother (Rachel) dies while giving birth to him. I bet Benjamin is somehow the cause of the baby making problem.

Ben’s mother’s name was Emily.

Maybe’s he’s like Captain Jack Harkness. Sure, he can’t really die, die, but he can inconveniently die for a couple minutes.

“Follow me, men! I don’t need a gas mask! [_choke_gurgle\*drop]”

“Great, now we need to wait for him to stand up. So he can drop dead in another minute.”

Less impressive a victory procession when you keep falling over dead.

The show presented it to us in the way you describe: Daniel talks to Desmond, then jumpcut to the future, and Desmond has a “new” memory. But this doesn’t really break the “what happened, happened” rule. There was never a timeline where Desmond & Daniel don’t have that conversation; Desmond just doesn’t remember it. This is basically the same as Locke giving his birth date and location to Richard, causing Richard to go there. The only difference is that Desmond doesn’t remember the conversation for the intervening years, presumably because his consciousness is all timey-wimeyed up.

So what if Rose & Bernard died during a time warp that took everyone back 40-50 years? It’s possible they had the brain frying nosebleeds, laid down and died, and time warped without them.

It happened to Charlotte, right? She was warping along with everyone else, she died, the flash came, Daniel warped without her (which is why, to him, her body vanished).

The Egyptian connection is interesting, given that the “exit” from the island is in Tunisia. In ancient times, did the Egyptians extend their rule across the Mediterranean coast to the area we now call Tunisia? I know that Carthage had an empire in what’s now Libya, which is closer, but did the Carthaginians have an independent empire going back as far as the Egyptian one? Was the wider North African coast ever dominated by Egypt?

Great find, I’m much more convinced of this now, over the Anubis theory. The arguments for the head piece, ears, double Ankhs (or whatever it is she’s holding in both hands), a motherhood goddess, and the four (!) toes are incredibly convincing. A _much_ better fit.

I’d be shocked if this isn’t our statue. Shocked, I say!
