Glenmorangie is the largest selling single-malt in Scotland, if that tells you anything. Tasty stuff.

Bowmore. Darkest is a treat. Lagavulin 16 or Bruichladdich Moine Mohr are really nice too. Super-duper peaty! But Bowmore makes a nice, sweet, leathery scotch not nearly as overpowering as the nice yummy peaty scotches.

Laphroaig would be my choice. Not sure of the price where you are.

That’s a lot cheaper than the budget, but if you like that peaty flavor…

The Macallan 17 yr fine oak would be a safe choice for that ballpark price range, although that will run about $20 more than your budget. The 15 year oak should clock in at the $80-$100 range. If you know the person likes very peaty scotches, the Arbeg Uigeadail is really nice and will cost you in the neighborhood of $70.

I got my scotch drinking organ teacher a bottle of scotch for Christmas once. Chivas Regal. Skimming through here, I haven’t found one mention of it yet. He liked it, but am I to assume that it’s the Jim Beam of scotch…cheap and grotty?

The 18yr and 25yr are reasonable-to-very-good scotches. The bog standard 12 year is at about the level of, oh, a Johnnie Walker Black, at best. In my opinion, Chivas Regal is a bit overpriced for its quality. Also, like Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal scotches are blended malts, not single malts, which are often seen as less desirable by whiskey enthusiasts. (It’s not a completely fair assessment, but I would agree that the average single malt is better than the average blend or vatted malt.)
