Eckrich used to make a luncheon meat called Macaroni & Cheese Loaf. It even had (few and far between) little bits of red pepper in it.
Good Og, that was some tasty stuff! They discontinued it a few years ago.
Wow, I was just looking up the Caravelle bar today!
SweeTarts. The original version from the '60s. Yes, there’s something called SweeTarts still on the market, but they are totally different: different flavors, different shape, different packaging, and hard as rocks.
These are the Sunshine Lemon Coolers. I get them at Dominicks. And yes, they taste the same, and yes, the first time I bought them I ate a whole box in two sittings.
This is the biggest thing I miss. I hardly ever had them growing up when they were around so it was a rare treat when I did. A couple of years ago I tried to make my own and it’s just not the same.
Sav-on Drugstores in SoCal used to have Ice Cream counters in their stores–$0.05 for a single and $0.10 for a double dip. Carnation Ice Cream, when ice cream was real and not full of fillers.
During the summer Carnation would make a Root Beer Swirl flavor, best ice cream I’ve ever had.
Thrifty Drugs, too. The ice cream was not scooped; it was “plugged” with a utensil that deposited a precisely measured perfect cylinder of ice cream onto the cone.
You can still get these at some Rite Aid stores (that’s what Thrifty became, at least here in northern California). I can think of at least two Rite Aids within close driving distance of my house where you can get Thrifty ice cream. They still use the plug, but you can get sugar cones now in addition to the traditional cake cone.
My favorite Thrifty flavor is Chocolate Malted Krunch. Mmmmm…
When I was a kid, whenever I would go to Grandma’s house she would ask " Want a pop? Want a fizzie? As soon as I turned 18 it changed to “Want a beer”?
