Lost foods

Moon Pies aren’t just sold in the South. I see them for sale all over the Pacific Northwest.

This happens to be my problem too. Have moved around a lot and each time I move I can add more items on the list of things I miss. Mind you, my list isn’t necessarily brand named stuff but the availability of fresh stuff.
I’d give my left nut for a ready supply of fresh New Mexico Hatch chili peppers, both red and green. I order dried chili directly from NM, but oh to be able to get it fresh… I’d even settle for frozen. But they won’t ship it internationally.

Sometimes it’s location too. Like a slice of heavenly New York pizza sprinkled with garlic salt and chili flakes. Don’t get me wrong, pizza is readily available here, but it’s nothing like that NY pizza.

Then there is the experience, like picking your own chanterelles in the forests of Sweden with your grandmother, then having grandma saute them in fresh homemade butter (yes she made her own butter from the fresh milk from the farm next door). Heavenly!

Sometimes freshness is key. I love uni sushi and that is available in the Japanese restaurants here, but I remember when I was in a little fishing town in Southern Japan, not too far from Osaka where fishing boats would come in with a catch of fresh sea urchins. For a few yen, a fisherman would crack one open right there and you sort of slurp that down. Sooo delicious and fresh! (Which I guess is no surprise since it’s technically still alive.)

I could go on, but that would be a long post.

As for Bishop’s Finger Kentish Ale, that is available in this ex-colony. And I do occasionally enjoy some.

Yeah, I just got back from Safeway and saw them. There were strawberry, apricot/peach and a couple of different kinds of berry Newtons. And they’re not fake Newtons, either, but the honest-to-goodness real things from Nabisco.

I would think that anyone who lives near a Cracker Barrel can get them too. I’ve seen them in the store section at Cracker Barrels up here in the midwest. I’d expect that they stock them at every location.

Life ceased to be worth living with the demise of Cocoa Marsh.

Hostess Pudding Pies in flavors other than chocolate. I really miss vanilla and whatever flavor those green Ghostbusters tie in pies were.

Jello Pudding Pops. Apparently they’re still occasionally around, but not like how there were in the 80’s. The last time I ran across some, they were like half the size of the real deal. And no, it’s not just me getting bigger, the old ones were nearly the size of a double popsicle that hadn’t been broken in half yet (though the Pudding Pops only had one stick and were not intended to be broken). The newer ones were, well, slightly smaller than one of the halves of a broken double popsicle. No, eating two isn’t an allowable substitute! Also, like the Pies I mention earlier, there didn’t seem to be any of the old flavor varieties, just chocolate.

I mean, sheesh, I like chocolate as much as any red blooded American, but damn ass hell, sometimes I want a different flavor!

Speaking of Jello, Jello Pops. Similar to Pudding Pops, but made of Jello instead of Pudding. If these are ever around at all anymore, I’ve never run across them. And if they were, I bet somehow they’d be made of chocolate now, as little sense as that would make.

Just to show I’m not a total anti-choclite (no, not a typo :p), Hostess used to sell something called a Choco Bliss, which was pretty much the most accurate name for a product as I’ve ever had. Haven’t seen one in decades, though.

First time I’ve seen Towne Club in nearly 20 years was when Walmart had a display of the stuff sitting out in middle of one of the wide aisles. Then as suddenly as it was there, it was gone again. Just wasn’t the same not buying it by the pallet from the Towne Club store (certainly not enough of a variety of flavors), though the one bottle I got was pretty good.

I’ve heard reports (not all that recent) that Kickapoo Joy Juice can be found in Malaysia. Whether it’s still in limited production or these bottles are reeeeal old, the reporter declined to speculate.

I remember Malted Milk tablets that used to come in a roll like Life Savers. I loved those things as a kid, but when I tried to find them on my last visit to the States, the clerk at the candy counter had no idea what I was talking about.

At Saturday matinees when I was a kid, I remember buying a flat caramel candy with some kind of white swirl in it that I guess tasted like vanilla. I loved the way it melted in my mouth. I think it was called Snorkels (this was way back, when the candy you bought at a cinema’s refreshment counter was still cheap).

I also remember binging on Green River soda pop from the vending machines in the lobby. I’ve never tasted anything like it since. This was also when movie theaters sold hot buttered popcorn with real butter.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but I still love french fries, onion rings, and pronto pups deep-fried in fresh lard, though I doubt you can find them today. They have a wonderful lush flavor that’s impossible to get from vegetable oil.

I used to love drinking phosphates at drugstores and ice-cream parlors. My favorites were cherry and lime. Don’t think you can find those nowadays, either. :frowning:

Horlicks Malties? I get the chocolate ones online.

Caramel creams? Was the center kind of powdery? http://www.goetzecandy.com/

malted milk tablets

That looks about right, except mine came in a roll, not a bag. Malt tablets, as opposed to chocolate-covered Malted Milk Balls, which I also love.

Since I discovered Horlick’s powder, I stock up on the stuff when I’m in Canada and sometimes just eat it out of the jar.

I remember these, too, but Snorkels were flat rectangles maybe 3–4 inches across and 1/4 of an inch thick.

I was in Walmart on Saturday and they had Heinz Mustard. There is a catch however. It was in a three pack with one bottle each of mustard, ketchup, and relish.

Some gourmet restaurants fry things in interesting stuff, Arcadia in San Jose has Goose Fat French Fries which are wonderful!

I loved TEAM cereal. It was my favorite. Haven’t seen it in well over a decade.

I miss baked Bugles snacks. The regular ones are full of grease and make me ill. I also miss Eagle Brand snack foods, especially the chips and honey-roasted peanuts.
