LoTR - Can someone explain the attraction?

For me, it’s two things (both already mentioned, but I thought I’d chip in anyway):

  1. The world. Tolkien created a language, then a world for the language, then a history for the world. I don’t know of any other similar approach in literature. That means that reading his stories is like reading history, but you get down on the individual level, listening to individual lines and watching individual actions, making it all graspable. Simply put, the world is thought-through and interesting, rather than just serving as the backdrop for the story. The story is just one of many things happening in that world.

  2. The consistency. Pick any book, movie or TV series, and you’ll find a dozen websites devoted to pointing out and attempting to solve its inconsistencies. With Lord of the Rings, I don’t know of one, and if there is one, I’d say it isn’t all that busy. The world works, seems real.

I’ll cheerfully agree that the first 100 pages or so are slow and boring, and that the characters are wooden and uninteresting throughout the book. The grand scope of the story and the incredible vividness of the world make up for that.

I agree that LotR has a very well-developed world behind it, but others have already elcuidated that quite well, so that’s all I’ll say on that.

But as for this board specifically, a large part of why you haven’t seen anything like that monster thread before is just that for technical reasons, we couldn’t have monster threads before. Consider, for example, SPOOFE’s thread on the Enterprise vs. a star destroyer: It only came to an end because the software couldn’t handle ten-page threads, and the momentum died when a sequel thread was opened. Had it not been for the software, that one probably would have gotten just as big. It just happens that Fingolfin’s thread was the first nerd-thread started after the latest board upgrade.

Geez, I feel like a celebrity or something for starting that thread! Trust me, I had no idea it was going to turn into the beast it is today. It has a life of it’s own now. I can’t control it anymore. Everytime I look at the thread title I hear Gene Wilder screaming in the background, “it’s alive! It’s Alive!! IT’S ALIVE!!!”, followed by Eminem, “I’ve created a monster, but no one want’s to see a monster no more, they want Slim Shady!”. I don’t know why, I just do.

Regarding the attraction of Tolkien, specifically LotR, I will quote these words from the great Ursula K. Le Guin:
