“Livestock Brand Commission personnel investigate all agricultural crime in Louisiana including livestock thefts (cattle, equine, hogs, emus, ostriches, **turtles** , sheep, and exotics), farm machinery and equipment; maintain brand records and publishes a book of brands every 5 years. **All enforcement personnel are commissioned by Louisiana State Police and have full police powers in the performance of their duties**.” [-=Linky=-](http://www.ldaf.state.la.us/animal-health/veterinary-health-division/livestock/) Bolding added. “Freeze! Drop the turtle!” They even have a nice PDF to let you register your own brands, and a brand book so you can get ideas. ---

its not that big these days but there used to be an edible turtle meat industry in Louisiana and the south that canned turtle meat was a real thing … i have a cookbook from the 60s with pictures of the cans for reference … And the big cattle and sheep states also have various versions of the same thing although i think hanging a thief that was caught red-handed was finally banned
