Low Disk Space?

In this regard I have always found the various Windows cleanup tools to be pathetic. They spin their gears for ten minutes, and then tell you they have found 1.36M of files, on a 68G disk, that can be removed, and would I like it to do so?

Other clean-up utilities that I have found on the Web, both commercial and freeware, do not do much better, with one outstanding exception:

Tune-Up Utilities 2008.

It routinely locates multiple GIGS of removable files, and I have never had a problem from allowing it to do so. It’s been a great help, at least for my computer which runs Vista Business. In my case, IIRC the extraneous data is usually from restore points. When I run it again in a day or two, I’ll come back here and give a breakdown of where the space was going. You can get a 30-day trial for free, and then it’s around $40 for a license.

Another useful program, much like TreeSize, is Spacemonger. Again you can get a free trial, but then have to pay. What makes this better than TreeSize, and worth the money, is that it runs much faster and has better display options. Also, it showed me things that TreeSize won’t, like the Windows\Install folder.

IMHO a better way to manage this is to limit the space used in the first place using vssadmin

Treesize Pro shows the \windows\installer folder just fine here. For some folders you must run Treesize in Administrator mode. Maybe you’re looking at an older version?
