They built a massive army of combat droids, whose entire purpose was to be on the front line of a war - and then gave them enough self-awareness to show legitimate fear in the face of death. When _Return Of The Jedi_ was being developed, the Emperor’s Throne Room was originally going to be in a lava cave, on a planet called Had Abbadon. That got scrapped, but elements of that idea have been sprinkled through various other media until they solidified the details in the Prequels. The answer was right in front of everyone’s face the whole time, but few saw it. Darth Vader. Darth was obviously dark. And Vader could be a short version of invader. So Dark Invader. Makes sense. With all the Germanic references, the storm troopers, the Nazi helments it was misssed. The German/Dutch word Vader means father. Dark Father, and whose father?, it should have been obvious, but it wasn’t to most viewers. ---

Hell, now I’m 63 I still don’t speak German. It certainly wasn’t “obvious”, and if you pay attention to interviews, and the dialog in Star Wars, it wasn’t at all obvious to Lucas, either. ---
