Yeah, saving face does actually make some sense as a reason for a fake. Especially after Kennedy declared that the America could do it by the end of the decade.
Not that I really believe it was a fake or anything. 
Then there is another reason. I had a neighbor who is a Hari Karishna beliver (that dosn’t look right but I’nm not going to fix it). and the bagavagita (another misspelling) said that the moon is further away then the sun. And because that IS so, the moon landings have to be fake. No amount of talking about solar eclipes or other solar facts would move him. THE LANDINGS WERE FAKE!!! because the bagawhateveritis is correct!!!
