I didn’t check the wiki article, but I seem to remember that the first time she mentioned rape was when she was about to be taken into custody by police who were called at behest of the second stripper at a local supermarket. After crying rape, she was instead taken for a medical exam.
A few days later, she supposedly told a bouncer at the strip club where she worked that she was going to “get paid by some white boys”. So the rape allegation may also have been an extortion attempt after she thought about her options.
Firestorm ensues.

Der Trihs is also spot on wrt to female felons getting weaker punishments than men would for the same crime. There is, in fact, an intense reluctance to give female murderers the death penalty under any circumstances.

ETA: Of course, “retarded” is just another way of saying “delayed”, as in ignition timing in a car. Still carries the false assumption they’re going to catch up. Ones I worked with, we figured if they could be taught how to catch a bus and buy stuff in a shop we had achieved a laudable goal; but I’d rip the beating heart out of anyone who hurt them.
My niece lives on her own, has a car and a job and will retire with a government pension as a GS-2. The enormous amount of work and support that went into her being in that position is invisible to most of the world around her. Everyone thinks that she’s so brave and special, and have no idea that the truly special people are her family, who have dealt with every screaming meltdown, every would-be predator, the annual “but what about MY birthday” crying jags and dozens of other issues. Her finances were strictly controlled by her mother (now deceased), and now by her siblings, who have guardianship of her. She is mentally handicapped, which I believe is the best descriptive for anyone who has those sorts of problems. Couching it in polite PC terms is only for us, not for them. When her mother died a few weeks ago, her response was, basically, “Well, who is going to make Christmas cookies?”
