I was having the same problem with my MacBook Pro a few years ago. I maxed out the RAM and the problem went away. I know it costs money, but I have to agree with those folks that are recommending more memory.

It costs money, but memory’s pretty cheap nowadays. Start at Crucial.
That’s a bit vague. The Memory tab lists separate values for Free, Wired, Active etc. Is the Free value low? Is Swap Used and Page Ins-Outs high? If so, you are indeed running low on memory and adding more will help.
There’s also the question of why you’re running low on memory. Click the Real Mem and Virtual Mem tabs at the top of the Activity Monitor to see which processes are using the most memory.
