Made it through the entire road bike race season crash-free only to bite it on a charity ride.

Quite a bit of pain the last few days, but the percocet and tramadol is helping. The staples and half cast come off on the 28th, and then I start physio.

As for my bike, there is apparently a guy in Vancouver, B.C. that can repair carbon frames. The crack in the frame is pretty small, and he guarantees the integrity of his work, so I’ve sent him pictures and am awaiting a quote. Should be about $500. The rest of the bike is in good shape actually. I have some damage to my right hood and bike seat, but minor.

Yup, I do. 'Cause on today’s charity ride someone didn’t know how to negotiate between the potholes. The good news for her is that I helped break her fall when she took me out. Nothing broken, but road rash & I’m walking a bit gingerly right now. :frowning:

How bout you, EmAnJ, any better today?

Oh no! And yes, that’s exactly why they’re dangerous. In fact, after I was discharged from the hospital last Saturday, we made our way to where my bike was along the ride route. There were SO MANY riders just suddenly cutting in to traffic, no looking over their shoulders, nothing. Really dangerous situation, we had to honk at a few riders. Scary.

Sorry to hear you had an accident too! What ride were you doing today? I’m doing all right - back to work tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes.

Just a quick update for those interested.

I had the cast on for a total of 16 days, but had to take it off a couple of times to re-wrap and adjust. I ended up with a nasty pressure sore on my wrist bone (I have boney wrists I guess) and got a good look at my arm during one of those times. Frankenstein-y!

This past Thursday I got all of the staples out and the cast off. I was also able to get an idea of what they’d done, which was put in a couple of pins and some wire to hold it all together. I still have a wicked bruise and will for a few weeks before it gets absorbed back in. It’s really hard where the bruises are and I seem to have lost a lot of feeling on the back of my arm. Hopefully that comes back!

I’m doing daily exercises to try and get my range of movement back. I can almost straighten, but can only bend to about 90 degrees right now, which sucks for eating/makeup/doing my hair, etc. The surgeon said with work, I should be to 100% within three months.

Sometime next year I go in to get the pins out, as I can easily feel the heads of the pins through the skin on the back of my elbow and will have issues bumping or leaning on that spot. Apparently it’s just a local, small cut, and pull them out. That icks me out more than anything!

So when do you get back on the bike?

I wish you a full recovery. And there is no chance in hell that I am clicking on a single one of your links!

Ouch, just thinking about it makes me want a pain pill.

Yesterday was three weeks from OP, If she hasn’t been on the trainer for at least two of them I’m gonna be disappointed.

Loved the pictures. The Xray was great for seeing what actually happened.

Hang tough and laugh at them all.

I fell off my motorcycle once, story here is your bored.
I only bring it up because that, off hand, trying to type comment is why I started messing with a computer in the first place.

Been there, done that.

One of my “ouch” moments.

As soon as possible, which means as soon as I can brake strongly with my right hand. I still signed up for fall cyclocross season (which starts Wednesday, but I’ll probably miss the first two weeks), and I’m buying a fat bike for winter, so…

Sorry Spiderman, you’ll have to be disappointed. I lent my trainer out to someone who needed it more than I (my FIL who is recovering from knee surgery), but I’ll be back on by next weekend for sure (I’m considering trying a commute this week, but like I said, I need to make sure I can brake properly first).

Yeah, it was a bit of a trick question. Non-cyclists would think she would be crazy to ride so soon after the crash, while racers would wonder why she is taking so long.

I’d only ride the CX bike since the brakes are reversed on them & you’ll have more power to squeeze the rear brakes.

::sigh:: I guess I’ll let you off the hook, but you only have one trainer, & no rollers?

Well, EmAnJ, how goes it? Have you been able to ride?

Thanks for asking!

I got the official go ahead for all activity from my surgeon two weeks ago, and I’m sure you can guess what I was doing the next day. I’ve been out on my old road bike and doing casual and commuter rides on my cross bike. Nothing really serious as the weather is starting to turn, but I’m certainly back at it.

The elbow itself is probably at 75%. I will never get full natural extension (I hyper-extend naturally) but am expected to get to 10 degrees (slight bend). Last check I was at 120 for flexion, and I’ve probably gained another 10 degrees over the last couple of weeks. My scar is healing well, but it’s certainly noticeable. I still have slight bruising too. I’ve whacked the pins in my elbow a few times - that really fucking hurts - but will be going in as soon as possible to get them out. My elbow cracks with certain movements now too.

In related news, I’ve been working through a local bike shop and Specialized to do a crash replacement on my frame. I did get a quote from a guy on the west coast who does guaranteed carbon repair, but I elected to go for a new frame just in case. I had the 2013 Venge Expert, so while I qualified for the crash replacement, they only do them at the Pro model and up (one step up from my model). Different colours though, so I’m not getting my sexy matte black Venge, I’m back to the shiny black and red. Not a huge deal in the big picture I suppose, and the colours match my team kit.

Originally I had hoped I could keep my old frame, get it fixed, and use it as a criterium bike, but under the crash replacement program, Specialized asks the dealer to essentially destroy the frame and send in proof of destruction. So, no extra frame for me. Also, even though it’s a crash replacement, I still pay base cost - for my 52" 2014 Venge Pro frame, I’m out of pocket $1400.

We ran in to some issues - they accidentally ordered and build up a 54" before anyone noticed - so I am just getting my bike back this weekend or early next week. I’ll be taking her out for a test ride as soon as possible.
